Title: Ebay Manufacturer refurbished chip ?
Post by: bilko on July 07, 2013, 08:01:21 pm
I saw this on Ebay, can anybody explain  to me what manufacturer refurbished means in the context of a chip ?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IC-AD584JH-Integrated-Circuit-IC-AD584-584-/310351625969?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item484265fef1 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IC-AD584JH-Integrated-Circuit-IC-AD584-584-/310351625969?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item484265fef1)

Edit: I can see that the pins were previously soldered and an attempt has been made to straighten them. Salvaged components ?

I have no idea, the pins look like they have been around the block, maybe they've been ripped out of something , and just cleaned up in some one kitchen is that "refurbished"

In case you missed it, Ebay gives the definition of manufacturer refurbished as follows:

Manufacturer refurbished: An item that has been professionally restored to working order by a manufacturer-approved vendor.  This means the product has been inspected, cleaned and repaired to meet manufacturer specifications and is in excellent condition. This item may or may not be in its original packaging. See the seller’s listing for full details.

I have my doubt about the "by a manufacturer-approved vendor" though. Probably removed from a circuit and polished  :)

Do you think that they may have "refurbished" the internals and kept the same cannister  :P

I'd very much doubt it

Yeah it wouldn't be economically viable I wouldn't think.

If you search for AD584JH you better use a source that you can trust:

http://www.pollin.de/shop/dt/NDc4OTI4OTk-/Bauelemente_Bauteile/Aktive_Bauelemente/Spannungsregler/AD584JH.html (http://www.pollin.de/shop/dt/NDc4OTI4OTk-/Bauelemente_Bauteile/Aktive_Bauelemente/Spannungsregler/AD584JH.html)

This are brand new parts and not refurbished, what ever that means in this special case.

Digikey has them in stock... 11$, one piece.
Farnell has the DIP version with the same specs for 9$.

The Ebay seller has two offers and no sales since January 2013. I think that there is something a little fishy here. The manufacture date code appears to be 2008, the leads haven't been cropped, the top of the can has cavitation marks as if it has been ultrasonically cleaned and the leads have been re-tinned. Possibly a batch that have been subject to poor storage and corrosion, certainly not worth taking a risk with.

The other link shows the same chip with totally different markings, I can't see the manufacturer's mark at all.
