Totally escapes me too.
Where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?

Talk about trivial things.

You haven't even sorted out the EEVBlog masonic handshake yet.

I'm actually working on my own 1oz silver EEVblog coin. Anyone with graphics arts skills in coin design, get in touch  ;D Or I might put the concept on 99designs and pick a winning design?
I don't really get the "challenge coin" concept though, I don't think it's a thing here as I've never herd the term until recently.

It's popular among Defence (Army, Navy, Air Force) units and some security agencies/law enforcement, more so in America but reasonably popular in Australia/New Zealand.

Hmmm.  Make a badge as a small round PCB, black soldermask, white silkscreen and ENIG pads, with the EEVblog logo on it and space on a rectangle of silkscreen to write ones's name or nym, above the text
EEVblog.com
forum member

and it could be useful for mutual recognition at events.    A very large pad on the back would allow brass safety pins, or various types of badge clips to be simply soldered on.  It should look pretty good with an ENIG track round the perimeter framing it.

Or maybe spec ENIG finish for supporters and ordinary immersion tin for plain forum members so there are gold and 'silver' badges.

Just for the sake of historical accuracy.

I've recently heard pins are in. A podcast I listen to has just added one to their merch.

Ha! Yeah. I'm aware.  That's a great movie but the scene from Blazing Saddles was just so much funnier.

I don't really get the "challenge coin" concept though, I don't think it's a thing here as I've never herd the term until recently.

You keep a Law Enforcement related challenge coin in your pocket just in case you get searched for some strange reason.  Will it help?  Probably not...  OTOH, it can't hurt!

Over here the thing you really want is a NUJ Press Card in your wallet. A old colleague of mine of, *ehm*, dusky appearance was unreasonably stopped and searched very aggressively once. When the Press Card was found the policeman in question visibly blanched and being addressed as "Sonny" suddenly became "Sir".

the only time the badge things   make   sense is when their is a deadline to assemble and program them with a custom firmware.

sorta like the old hacking competitions but electronics.

An update of Dave's µWatch with a a colour graphic display, (or just maybe a mono eInk one for battery life), would make an interesting badge with ongoing utility.
