EEVblog + Circuit Cellar. A good pair-up?
« on: January 07, 2015, 10:17:16 pm »
I read that Steve Ciarcia (a slightly older version of Dave), recently re-purchased his old magazine (Circuit Cellar Ink) back - after selling it a few years earlier to Elektor.

Circuit Cellar was a top-shelf micro/electronics-engineering blog on paper, well before the web existed, growing through Steve's earlier columns in microcomputing and BYTE magazines.  Elektor's influence has diluted it considerably - but there is still a lot of love for CCI.

People have been discussing 'how to make Dave profitable' - whether he wants to change or not, but from my own interactions with Circuit Cellar and other industry / tech blogs, a sync-up between EEVblog aand CCI - would be a huge asset for all concerned with sustaining burnt-finger technology if nothing else , and the support of the rational exploration that pursues elegant solutions over retail dollars.

Dave - meet Steve, Steve, this is Dave

(The old black masthead was so much easier to spot on the newsstand!)
I hope Steve restores some of the older 'grittier' engineering attitude of the magazine & site.
Currently it looks like every other grey text on a white background (apple look-alike) web site)

I remember reading Steve on paper (Byte?, Popular Electronics?).  He was a great follow on to Forrest Mimms.

Yeah, I am that old !!

I'm struggling to see:

1. What can Dave offer Steve?
2. What can Steve offer Dave?
3. Where the extra hours in each week come from.

At the moment, Dave has an exponentially increasing viewer base, so long as he keeps making reasonable quality videos in subjects that his viewers find interesting (note, this may well not be what you or I find interesting). Each article in a magazine takes a HUGE amount of prep work before it hits the news stands, this really doesn't tie in with the way Dave works.

On top of that, magazine viewership and video viewership may not overlap that much. That means little synergy.

I would normally agree, except that this readership (at least the hardcore guys & girls), tend to stay on topic much longer than fan sites or news blogs.  The fundamentals don't change much (i.e. physics) - so we tend to explore the corners a lot more to eek out the last mil of energy/performance/price from each drop of inspiration.

OTOH: If Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, or Oasis were into technology, we'd all be irrelevant. :)
Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

If any of those people were into technology, they would rapidly lose the attention of the mainstream press.

Example: Donny Osmond

Interesting thought. Does anyone have any ideas for how we can get these people interested in technology, and out of the press?

Be careful what you wish for, because the people that follow those personalities wouldn't have anything to do so they will just hang with you and you won't be able to get any work done.

Agree I can't imagine a model for how Dave and Steve could pair up effectively - or even if Dave would want to pair up with anyone  :box:  ;)

In terms of celebs furthering the interest in electronics, my hand's up for Kim Kardashian... love watching all that magic smoke escaping...

Steve would make a great Amp Hour Guest, as he has had as large an exposure to assorted fields as Dave. That might be a good thing to do, but I would agree that there is little in collaboration that would be there.

There would be some good synergy though, like if Dave published an article on CC about the uCurrent. CC is a good magazine, though I stopped subscribing when ElektorE took over, as i really did not like the Elektor way of making you pay for the magazine, then pay again for the firmware for any project, or only having a preprogrammed part for it. Not helped by the price being in Euros, and then charging shipping as well on top of it for even bits.

Some people seem to think any curve going upwards is going up exponentially.

That's a very good idea. Dave, Chris please make it happen.

CC turned down my uWatch project article.
