EEVBlog DaveHead Logo
« on: December 29, 2020, 12:03:30 am »
Been thinking about getting something to put on the wall in the background on my main shooting bench, like a lit version of my DaveHead logo perhaps.
So thought I'd do a poll if that's a good idea.
If it is, I need to find a place to get something like this made, suggestions invited. And then what type of logo.
I thought maybe a refresh of the old B&W abstract DaveHead logo might be in order, so I asked on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/eevblog/status/1341587123430805504

Best and most well received response is the Ghostbusters type logo using the original face graphic. I like it, it kinda hides the weirdness of the collar on the original, and would probably look great with the red and white parts lit up on a black background.
Or just the EEVblog logo with the White and Blue text lit up?

Thoughts , suggestions, and alternatives appreciated.
Thanks.

The Ghostbusters one is funny, however: A lit up symbol / panel is quite a distraction. It may work if it is far in the background and blurred due to depth of field. -> See Peter McKinnons Vlog for reference

Yes, I've seen lots of ones far in the background that work really well. Obviously not possible here. Although could still be used around the lab in places I guess. My lab really isn't big enough to have nice bokeh'd backdrops. Although I have been thinking about experimenting with rearranging my Mailbag bench to possibly get that if I'm creative enough...

Damn, I just had a thought, what about a TV behind the bench? Then the backdrop could become anything...

It depends. If you can make active use of the TV / monitor in your videos, then yes.
I would love to chip in some ideas if possible, but can you please elaborate on what your thought process is?
Are you getting bored and just feel like changing things up? Do you want to improve the setting of your videos? Do you want to make changes to your brand? ...?

My main question is: What is your motivation and what would you like to achieve? :)

It's never that complicated with me  ;D
I just think the wall background looks boring, and I've seen many channels have those lit signs in the background and thought maybe it would look cool.

After watching your video I'd say keep it "real", maybe some shelves with stuff or if you must the logo, that could be build up
from micro current boards or other miscellaneous bits and bops.

Also keep the phone in shot, you can make it ring with a button and have trump or anyone else edited in the video on the
phone yelling bullshit! or something else of course..
Like a substitute for the bullshit button, with a bit more theatrics.

You could put a magnetic board, so you could print the logo on photographic paper with one of the printers.

Along with the logo you could also put on the wall the postcards from the mailbag, are people still send these ? Notes in davecad, other small posters, draw from old electronics magazines

Nice idea, but too distracting I think.

How sure are you it is your main shooting bench? Since #1278 in January I counted 8 videos with "mailbag" in the title for 2020. Do you use the MSB for other than mailbag videos? If not it seems to be about 10% of your content uses that background.

I'm generally not a fan of such derivative designs based on well known and much loved iconic designs. So I would discourage overuse of such design elements. Unless you were a movie review channel.

Somewhere in a box you have the time display from the Delorean that never got the prominence I wished for.

Almot every bench video you see it shot there, including all the mailbag video "closeup" content. Teardown, reviews, almost everything is shot at that spot unless it need to be shot somewhere else for a specific reason. I've had essentially this same set up for the last decade.

AC controller could move quite easily, just pop it off the wall, look at the cabling, which will either be a few wire terminals, or a RJ45 socket and cable vanishing up the wall. All 24VAC wire, so easy to fish it out a new hole nearby to give a clear wall.

Likely inside just caps that are failing, very common on these as they use the usual PRC floor sweepings, and the suspects are the low value electrolytics along with hot resistors, and the bulging or leaking big ones.

Move to the left of the phone and you get the whole wall section to use. Does anybody actually ever use intercoms these days, most couriers will phone your mobile number from the entryway here, they find it easier.

Just got here from the video. I like the idea of the photo booth ESD mat, but ideally with a different, more neutral color. That green always looked on the sickly side to me. ;D

Either way, I'd shy away from anything lit up. I'm sure there's a way to do it right, but neon signs etc. in the background always look to my eye like they're totally throwing off the exposure of the rest of the shot. Probably just making sure the neon/LED strip/backlight is dim enough and/or the other lights are bright enough helps a ton.

I do like the blue & white logo (which in a video shot would also work as an explicit 'fingerprint'), although I wish the contrast between the blue text and the black background would be better (how, I'm not sure, maybe changing to a dark-grey background?)

I would go with a clutter-free setup.
-> Back wall painted in a medium dark grey or put a backdrop holder above, so you can experiment with different sets of backdrops that can be rolled up for storage.
-> Extra lights, maybe one or two panels that can be placed and rotated around your bench. Personally I like hanging lights from the ceiling with scissor arms. Go for ones that have a high CRI and can be adjusted for colour temperature.
-> Maybe switch the rubber mat for a grey or blue one with the EEVBlog Logo printed on it bottom left.

I already have two high CRI colour matched studio lights on stands either side of me.

Generally speaking, a good option. Just make sure it's never in absolutely perfect focus, or you'll get distracting moiré patterns like in this image. (Obviously, that guy's camera autofocused on entirely the wrong thing, since his face is blurry as heck.)

Graphically, either form of the DaveHead Logo works. Personally, I think you need to shave off the collar though. A background with electronic test equipment goes with the visual grammar of a technical vlog. Geeks love seeing geek stuff. All that random test equipment makes them one of you and you, one of them.

Question, is the 'Dave Head' logo a registered trade mark: (R) not (TM)? You already use it to brand the multimeter range, so does it have any legal protection? BTW I looked up the Ghostbusters trademark (3085055) on tmsearcg.uspto.gov . The registration states the mark consists of, "the letter 'o' formed by the international prohibition sign containing the image of a ghost." So although people are calling your logo the Ghostbusters logo, it's really a matter of their own personal interpretation that they are associating it with the Ghostbuster's franchise; there's no ghost and no 'o'. In other words, a glowing no-entry sign behind you should present no issues from YouTube's jittery compliance people.

Dave, if you don't mind, but your hand always reminds me of that hand on the static warning logos. A bit like this...

... so does it have any legal protection?

IANAL, but from my investigations some years ago for my own interests.....

There are 3 basic levels of trademark usage:
 1. A Trademark has legal standing simply by it being used as a trademark.  No formal intellectual property steps are required.
 2. Adding ™ to it's use is an explicit statement of the claim of it being a trademark.  Again, this can be simply added to each use of the trademark at the whim of the owner pf the trademark.
 3. Registering the trademark allows the owner to use the ® symbol.  The process allows for the trademark to be examined for uniqueness as well as being advertised for other parties to challenge.  Once registered, it provides a firm reference which can be searched by anyone - as well as being formally available for the examination of any new trademark applications.

One of the most important aspects of registration is to establish a date after which there can be no argument that the trademark has an owner - otherwise if a situation arises where the date from which the trademark was used is needed to be known, proof will be required.  This proof could be anything from a newspaper ad or other dated material to a business registration that uses the trademark in the documentation (this is especially relevant for text based trademarks).

In short, the "Dave hand" as it stands has protection.  Registering it just makes defending it easier.
