... so does it have any legal protection?

IANAL, but from my investigations some years ago for my own interests.....

There are 3 basic levels of trademark usage:
 1. A Trademark has legal standing simply by it being used as a trademark.  No formal intellectual property steps are required.
 2. Adding ™ to it's use is an explicit statement of the claim of it being a trademark.  Again, this can be simply added to each use of the trademark at the whim of the owner pf the trademark.
 3. Registering the trademark allows the owner to use the ® symbol.  The process allows for the trademark to be examined for uniqueness as well as being advertised for other parties to challenge.  Once registered, it provides a firm reference which can be searched by anyone - as well as being formally available for the examination of any new trademark applications.

One of the most important aspects of registration is to establish a date after which there can be no argument that the trademark has an owner - otherwise if a situation arises where the date from which the trademark was used is needed to be known, proof will be required.  This proof could be anything from a newspaper ad or other dated material to a business registration that uses the trademark in the documentation (this is especially relevant for text based trademarks).

In short, the "Dave hand" as it stands has protection.  Registering it just makes defending it easier.

Correct. As verified by my Trademark and Patent attorney.

Graphically, either form of the DaveHead Logo works. Personally, I think you need to shave off the collar though.

Yeah, I always thought the collar was kinda weird, so I like how the ghostbusters like symbol gets rid of that.

Had a lot of fun with this one, and enjoyed looking at all the other submissions.

Hello, brand new user!! It would have been nice if you had received even a 3 word answer, especially as it was your

The head actually isn't bad, the first one to actually do a decent alternative. Makes the simplicity and elegance of the original stand out though I think. Ultimately too "busy" to be useful in practice though.

Fr me, yes, for on-camera, no, it would look like crap. Waaaaay better to edit in the datasheet at the video editing stage.

Ever since I saw this video on The Tube I thought it would make a great EEVBlog logo - the full lettered one.

Also supporting the lab equipment background - kinda says what it's all about from first sight - the way I personally got hooked at Mr. Carlson's Lab channel  the second I saw it  ;D

On the TV background - yes quite versatile, but just feels as the TV itself looks a bit.. well, not so great. Back-lit projector screen could do wonders in this aspect, but would indeed require more space behind for a projector, even a short throw one. On the bright side, it can easily turn the whole back wall into a massive screen and even if stuff in front of it, still useful, can be used to project on parts of the background only, etc.

Happy New Year!

Dave, if you want to put up some art that clearly says EEVBlog, why not hang up a copy of the infamous batterizer monkey graphic?
