EEVblog forum browser/OS statistics?
« on: January 23, 2017, 07:28:36 am »
Dave, just for fun, I was wondering if you logged statistics on the browsers/operating systems people use to view your site/forum?

Given that you have mostly a technically-minded user base, I'd be interested in seeing the "spread" of technologies in use out there.

Failing that, I've added a non-scientific poll.

Yep.

Still works for 99% of sites I visit and I can tweak the settings to my heart's content. Why change? My fall-back browser is Firefox.

These sorts of stats are always interesting to read. I just looked at my site's stats for 2016, and IE was the most popular browser overall ???, with versions 6 and 11 the most popular. Firefox and Chrome had a significant percentage of users. 0.8% of page views were from Netscape, with most of that being versions 0.6, 0.95, and 3. Others I'd never heard of (with very small numbers) included Strata, Android Browser, BlackBerry, Nokia Browser, NetNewsWire, and Sony/Ericsson Browser. Wget, Lynx, and Bon Echo also made an appearance.

 8)

Personally I'd have thought that Firefox would be more popular with EEVBlog viewers.

Odd statistics. The numbers for Safari is a surprise.

@tautech
What's the difference between Firefox and Mozilla? What are the other 4% of OS used?
Sorry, don't know. They're reported as 2 different browsers.

Other OS's 2% and some # rounding.  ;)

Haven't got the quality of Stats diagnosis that Dave has.  :(

I actually use three different browsers (IE, Chrome and Firefox, the first two on Windows, the latter under Linux), depends on the machine and OS I happen to be using.  I haven't found a perfect browser - they all foul up somewhere or other.  And all have features to the UI that I like and dislike.

If I were designing Web pages I might have a strong opinion, but for what I do there isn't really a compelling reason to choose.

For the forum:

That Safari and Firefox numbers look so unexpected I'd be questioning if there is something wrong with the data, especially that firefox figure, a 7x difference between eevblog.com and the forums for firefox users... that seems fishy.

I don't disagree. Both come from Google Analytics

It's worth noting that a significant percentage of users will actively block Google Analytics. Especially Firefox users.

What's the difference between Firefox and Mozilla?

Mozilla here refers to the web browser in the Mozilla Application Suite, a set of Internet applications based on the Netscape Communicator suite (web browser, email client, calendar, HTML editor, etc.).  The suite lives on today as the SeaMonkey community project.

The Mozilla Application Suite was the foundation for the standalone web browser, Mozilla Firefox, the standalone email client, Mozilla Thunderbird, and other applications.

Adblock Plus will block Analytics and it is installed on a lot of Chrome browsers - like 40 million or so...

wow, in OS MS is winning big time. I guess not many tech guys watch eevblog's youtube channel on their smart tvs or cellphones  ;)
As for Linux, absence of worldwide marketing is bulling it back. no one buys a pc or laptop with linux os by accident,,, has to ask for it. not all users are techies, when people spend money on a pc they usually ask about for warranty, and it's not common to buy a pc with warranty without pre-installed os.

Amazon Silk (never even heard of it) is higher than IE usage on the forums? :o

I block Google Analytics too (sorry, if you want stats then look at your server logs, they'll be far more accurate and private), as well as a bunch of other tracking crap. I use IE, Opera, and Firefox, with occasional Chromium for sites that don't work with any of the others.

The remarkable differences between the poll results and the Google analytics results says something funny is going on.  Either someone is lying, or information is being modified as it bounces around the web.  While one can imagine reasons why the poll would be inaccurate (people wanting to give the "cool" answer, people just playing with/trolling the system), it seems that Occam's razor tells the answer, that Google Analytics is cooking the books.

I imagine the high safari numbers are from people on iPhones & iPads? On my Windows PC I typically use Chrome but I also browse the forum from my phone (Safari). I voted Chrome in the poll.

It depends how it identifies itself to servers. It's based on Firefox.
