EEVblog Live Event Time
« on: May 19, 2010, 02:43:28 am »
Given that many other tech blogs have a Sunday night show (US time), I figure there must a good reason for that.
That translates into around 8am Monday morning Sydney time, which is perfect for me.
Really, I doubt I'd be able to do it night times here, it's just too variable for me, so I think it's mornings my time or bust.

Let me know your thoughts.

Here is an example world times for 8am Monday Sydney time:

(GMT+10) Australia; New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania (Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart)
Monday, May 24 2010, 8:00am, 0:30hr
------------------------------------------------
(GMT-5) United States; Eastern time [daylight saving time]
Sunday, May 23 2010, 6:00pm, 0:30hr
------------------------------------------------
(GMT-8) United States; Pacific time [daylight saving time]
Sunday, May 23 2010, 3:00pm, 0:30hr
------------------------------------------------
(GMT0) United Kingdom; London, Birmingham, Glasgow [daylight saving time]
Sunday, May 23 2010, 11:00pm, 0:30hr
------------------------------------------------
(GMT+1) Germany; Berlin, Bonn, Frankfurt [daylight saving time]
Monday, May 24 2010, 12:00am, 0:30hr
------------------------------------------------

No .. and by taking in to account , all this wasted hours of talking about it...

I have lost my interest completely ...

And the same feelings I have for the upcoming DMM reviews too.

Yes ,  Dave are responsible to bring food on the table , and keep the Internet responses alive too..
as a Hobby ..

He cannot perform the same in both, so thats fine with me ..

WARNING: This post is inflammatory; and quite intentionally so. If you're the kind of thin-skinned person who can't handle that, then best to skip over this.

I'd rather like to watch the live broadcast, but it would have to posted be on a site that actually worked. Yeah, that's right - uStream doesn't work. I just tried watching some of Jeri Ellsworth's recorded videos on uStream, and they will not work. No matter what I try.

I just wasted an hour of my life trying everything to get uStream working. I tried looking at ten different videos by different people, I tried embedding a uStream video in a LiveJournal post, I tried watching live streaming events that the site claimed were happening right now, I tried watching recorded videos. Not a single one of them displayed a damn thing on my screen besides an empty black rectangle. uStream is screamingly stupid, or bloody incompetent, or both.

I'm not asking for help or advice, here. Please take any suggestions you may have along the lines of "well, did you try..." or "if you do ..., what happens?" and shove them straight up your well-meaning but gratingly patronizing arse.

Because, you see, you've entirely missed the point. My point is, if I can't simply point my browser at a URL and have the video come up, then uStream has utterly failed as a video provider. YouTube "just works" for me, and always has. And I don't see any reason uStream can't "just work" either.

Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm the only one having problems. If that's indeed the case, I'll just consider myself unlucky, take my lumps, and walk away. But I certainly won't be watching any live broadcasts on uStream...

Must be just you, I was just able to watch several recorded videos, and several Live streams just fine.

It takes two to tango ;). I'm not sure why you post that here, this is not the uStream feedback forum.

Since you gracefully inform us that you don't want any help to solve the problem, my conclusion is that you just want to vent. Telling uStream that their system is broken for you is a lot more productive than telling a third party. And I'm sure it will be more satisfying to scream at the people who might have actually something to do with your problems, although they might not be too motivated to do something about it with your attitude.

Because, you see, you've entirely missed the point. My point is, if I can't simply point my browser at a URL and have the video come up, then uStream has utterly failed as a video provider. YouTube "just works" for me, and always has. And I don't see any reason uStream can't "just work" either.
Then you're not much of a technical-minded person, if you can't see that there are about a million ways that anything can go wrong and only a few ways that will work properly. Have you never been amazed that something complex you designed did actually work properly? Now try this with several very complex systems that interact.

Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm the only one having problems. If that's indeed the case, I'll just consider myself unlucky, take my lumps, and walk away. But I certainly won't be watching any live broadcasts on uStream...
I'm sure that Dave will gladly refund you the price of admission for his live show. He did mention that he did this as an experiment, right?

Indeed. Hence why I walked away from them and won't be looking back. I do make mistakes - but I also do learn from them.

I'm not sure why you post that here, this is not the uStream feedback forum.

Because I don't believe they're capable of fixing the problem. If they had any kind of clue, the problem wouldn't have happened in the first place. Remember, Youtube works fine. If uStream can't get things working at least as well as YouTube, then they absolutely don't deserve to survive as a company.

To be honest, I would much rather that uStream fix their broken pile of shit website and player so I can watch the live show. But since I don't believe they are capable of doing that, I'm left with venting as pretty much my only alternative.

Telling uStream that their system is broken for you is a lot more productive than telling a third party.

As I said, I don't believe they can fix it. So no matter who I tell, I believe the outcome will be exactly the same. To whit: uStream will continue to be irreparably broken forever.

However, I might be able to do a minor good by warning people who might be thinking about using uStream that it's broken and useless... (Or at least that it doesn't work for me.)

And I'm sure it will be more satisfying to scream at the people who might have actually something to do with your problems, although they might not be too motivated to do something about it with your attitude.

If you took this as a personal affront toward yourself or towards Dave, then you've got issues. I think I was plenty clear that uStream is the problem. My rant was in no way intended to be directed towards the EEVBlog or any of the people on the forums here. I have no problems with either.

That's a very nice ad-hominem attack, congratulations!

On the topic of complexity in systems: A good programmer always seeks to minimize complexity. uStream either never learned that lesson, or were too afraid to stick to their guns. Either way, they're utter technical losses in the software realm.

Kinda tough to get a refund for a show you could never get into, innit? Not that I was looking for such a refund, mind you. I'm beyond happy that Dave willing gives up his free time to educate and entertain me. He should get a medal for his trouble.

My problems lay entirely with uStream and their lousy, pile of crap, sorry excuse for a website and streaming video player.

Well, their problem (live streaming vs. pre-encoded content) is harder, they're probably not doing it for as long, and they probably have far less resources. Now I don't rule out that they are a bunch of clueless idiots, that may be true, but Youtube isn't exactly a fair comparison.

As I said, I don't believe they can fix it. So no matter who I tell, I believe the outcome will be exactly the same. To whit: uStream will continue to be irreparably broken forever.
That's certainly possible, although you haven't given them the opportunity to prove you wrong.

If you took this as a personal affront toward yourself or towards Dave, then you've got issues. I think I was plenty clear that uStream is the problem. My rant was in no way intended to be directed towards the EEVBlog or any of the people on the forums here. I have no problems with either.
I'm sure I have plenty of issues, but I didn't take it personal against Dave (he's plenty capable of defending himself) or myself. You did post it on the eevblog forum, however, not on the uStream forum (if there is such a thing). And the message wasn't exactly 'Dave, uStream sucks, maybe you should try a different provider next time'.

That's a very nice ad-hominem attack, congratulations!
Not my intention, but thanks anyway!

On the topic of complexity in systems: A good programmer always seeks to minimize complexity. uStream either never learned that lesson, or were too afraid to stick to their guns. Either way, they're utter technical losses in the software realm.
Agreed, but on the other hand 'there are two ways to write bug-free software: make it so simple so there are obviously no bugs, or make it so complex that there are no obvious bugs'. The latter is definitely the more popular way. A web application programmer doesn't exactly have much control about the complexity of the underlying stack. I agree that a user should be able to expect that everything works out-of-the-box, especially for a website like uStream were people are not likely to go through a lot of trouble to get it to work. This doesn't make it simple from the programmer's point of view, there are lots of factors, for example: browser type/version, the availability of any plugins and settings, security settings by either the user or the IT department, any form of filtering (by the person itself, the company or the ISP/country if your country is so inclined), OS, any router/firewall on the way. Any one of those can screw up an application like uStream, so it's not terribly surprising if something doesn't work, although it may be their fault.

Same here.  I saw portions of what was listed as 'live' but I can't be sure.   It was jerky, video and audio desync so much if not stopped altogether that I finally stopped watching.

Sorry if anyone couldn't watch it, I don't know much about the technical details, I'm relying on UStream to make it all work.
Some people said no problems at 15fps with video, so obviously any problems are at Ustreams end.
Ustream are supposed to be the biggest when it comes to live broadcasting, but I guess it's not as foolproof as it's supposed to be?

Dave.

Yep, will do, it should be the next blog, editing now..
Don't know I'll be able to embed the text chat though, only got part of that and only in raw text, so I'd have to somehow sync it up to the video.
