EEVblog was added to the blocked websites in EasyList
« on: March 09, 2023, 09:18:03 am »
Hi Dave, and admins.  Since 2-3 days ago somehow eevblog.com has landed in the blocked sites list on EasyList.  This list is used by most addblockers, including uBlock Origin and AddBlock Plus.

As a result icons are not visible any more, thumbnail for attached pics doesn't show, the "New" icons for new/unread content are blocked, too, etc.  Everybody with an addblocker, which is very common to have nowadays, will see a chopped down forum with mostly text.

Even more, the EEVblog ads are now blocked, too, by default.  Before, they were visible even for those using addblockers, because yours were hosted locally.  My guess is this adding of eevblog.com will reduce your ads income, just a speculation, but keep an eye on that.  EEVblog was added on the EasyList around the date of 8 March or so.

Please see these 2 replies:

If you want EEVblog removed from the blocked sites list, somebody have to contact the EasyList list maintainers by email or by registering to their forum.

See at the bottom page, last paragraph of the https://easylist.to/

If you should encounter unwanted items or problems with the EasyList filter lists you should report the issues in the EasyList Forums. This will allow members to assist you in resolving problems and will notify the authors that the filter lists should be updated, a change that will rectify the issue for all users. You can also request assistance by e-mailing the EasyList authors directly.

If you ask for eevblog.com domain to be removed or not from the most common blocking domains is your decision, this post is just for your info.

For uBlock Origin:
- visit EEVblog forum
- click on uBlock icon
- click the eye symbol to disable cosmetic filtering on this site
- click the padlock symbol to make changes permament

Blocking the eevblog.com domain affects everybody with an addblocker, registered or occasional visitor, reading either the forum or the EEVblog.com blog.  Will affect legit ads coming from EEVblog, too.

There are many workarounds, but these would require action from the visitors.  A newcomer won't even know the pics are missing because of a blocking issue.  The proper way would be to remove eevblog.com from the EasyList, because EEVblog.com is not an adds domain.

I've fixed my browser already, and not complaining about anything.  This thread was just to inform Dave what it has to be done in case he decides to remove the EEVblog.com domain from the EasyList malicious sites list.

I fully agree. Just posted a quick workaround to deal with the EasyList issue until it will be resolved.

EDIT: Sent an email to EasyList. Let's see what happens next.

Oh I wondered why everything suddenly wasn't showing up. That's weird, I'm curious how it got added, I wonder if it was malicious?

I have no clue how those lists are maintained, so I dunno. Do they mostly blacklist entire websites from reports? If so, how many reports does that take?
It may have been malicious, but otherwise possibly a few people reported this website via their adblocker's report feature, maybe with the idea of having the adblocker block ads on EEVBlog without necessarily blocking everything, and the maintainers of the lists just messed up the filters. I don't even know to what extent those lists are maintained by humans or whether it's entirely automated. With the likely huge number of websites they have to handle, I wouldn't be surprised if some, if not most of it was automated and if some screw-ups were occuring on a regular basis.

And I can confirm that just disabling EasyList fixes the issue. So I'll have it disabled until they fix it.
Doing so, I noticed that there was a second list that actually itself included EasyList, so I had to disable both. Something to check if just disabling EasyList doesn't seem to fix it.

Thanks - confirmed here. Disabled Easylist in Adblock general options.  :-+

That's odd, but as I said, I don't even know how those lists are really maintained behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, I haven't seen much impact on other websites having EasyList disabled so far, I may never enable it again.

In Brave, the nearest option seemed to be 'Easylist Cookielist - filter obtrusive cookie requests'.
Removing that has restored some icons but not the 'country' ones that I most miss.

In Brave, just click the "lion's head" to the right of URL bar and remove the block on eevblog. Done.

What I don't understand is why refreshing the page will randomly pass/block the missing content in Firefox.

That's what I find odd too.  I originally dismissed any possibility that it was ad blocker related because of that.  You'd think it would just be consistently not working.

Better register and post it on the EasyList Forum – Report incorrectly removed content.

I can confirm that the erroneous rules, that hides user avatars and other images that are not ads, are
    eevblog.com###text-49
    eevblog.com##[data-pagespeed-url-hash][onload^="pagespeed"]

To actually block the ads on EEVBlog –– sorry Dave, but I have to, to be able to participate; I just cannot handle visible ads –– I do use
    ||www.eevblog.com/images/comm/*$image
    ||www.eevblog.com/forum/adseller/
so perhaps replacing the former with these two would be acceptable to EasyList maintainer (they're called fanboy on the above forum, and seem to monitor the forum actively).

Right now I'm running on a modified easylist.txt with the above changes.

I also have to block one animated avatar,
    ||www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=38498;type=avatar$image
as it too is just too distracting to me.

What I don't understand is why refreshing the page will randomly pass/block the missing content in Firefox.
Firefox-Ublock Origin has some kind of bug that causes Ublock to turn off occasionally.  Explicitly turning Ublock off, reloading the offending tab, and turning Ublock back on, and reloading the offending tab again –– both times with Shiftl+Reload –– fixes the issue.

As to individual images, like a specific avatar but not all avatars, especially when seen for the first time, I've noticed that rarely, at high congestion, somebody) inserts RST packets to my HTTPS connections.  For images, that just causes them to stop loading.  It is not supposed to happen, and ISPs here promise they don't do that to connections involving HTTP or HTTPS ports, but RST injection is how they "combat torrents and other file sharing from overusing the network".

FYI there edit:WAS is a domain squatter on "eevblog" using the ".co.uk" TLD. Do NOT click this See later post:

I once accidentally keyed this domain into my browser which then started a redirect sequence. A sequence that tried to send the browser to one of those sites that are all numbers and trace route stops responding somewhere in the south China sea. The squatter may have 'innocently' been moneterizing their spare domain via a trusty parking service [ like Sedo ]. But the advert redirdects where not from a trustworthy source.

I reported these redirect domains to Google using their alert service:
https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_badware/

On my LAN the rogue site is also blocked. Other rogue squatters with redirects may exist.

So similarily, someone, somewhere (a bot) may have been trying to do the right thing. But identified the wrong TLD.

Yes, the filter syntax is documented here.

(Edit: I first thought I was responding to Dave, not magic.)

The first one blocks the element with id text-49, i.e. id="text-49".  It matches the affiliate program area at EEVBlog front page (https://www.eevblog.com/), the block where Dave has the ANENG AN8008 DMM right now.
I do not consider it an ad, because it is Dave's.  It explicitly says –– twice –– that "buy anything and Dave gets a commission!".

(If I don't want to see that image, I can always add a rule to block all images on eevblog.com pages loaded from alicdn.com, but even I am not that sensitive; the page is full of distractions already, and in my opinion the perfect place to have that.  It does not affect anything on the forum at all.)

(If Dave wants to make EasyList, with my filters, block only the DMM image but not the text, move the image from alicdn.com to eevblog.com/images/comm/. This should be acceptable even for 'fanboy', the EasyList maintainer.)

The second one blocks all elements that have an onload attribute containing "pagespeed".  It is a library, that SMF and others use, to ensure UI images (denoted "critical") are loaded first, and all other media after.  This increasing page load speeds, reducing the latency before the page is useful.  It makes no sense to block these either; it is definitely a bug in the list.  It is what blocks avatars and other images from loading here.

I can't decide whether these (at minimum the pagespeed one) are just errors, or if a blocked member or one of the SJWs has decided to try and annoy Dave and us via EasyList, it being the main ad-blocking list I am aware of.  Maybe I'm overly paranoid, though, and they were just caught using automated scanning or something.

Included is what I see, screen resolution is rolled back.
Things are also rolling up, including all ads.

Are your distractions constantly on screen?

FYI,
here banner ad is now missing but space is there.

Ripper  :-+

UPDATE: eevblog.co.uk is now a super safe domain that links to the REAL eevblog.com

Dates ranges for the previous eevblog.co.uk existence: Created 30-Nov-2021 - Updated 01-Oct-2022 - Expired 30-Nov-2022

I have had negative experiences with so called trusted domain parking services (mentioning no names in German). For example, a parked domain exhibited one of two behaviours:window's user agents linked to a normal links page. Android user agents started a redirect chain to an obscurated latin american server. This flashed a fake "Malware Detected" alert message, with the invite to download a .apk "repair" file. And it was all done with Javascript in the banner ads. Needless to say, this domain was removed from their domain parking lot.

Some other unregistered eevblog TLDs include:
co ltd online tv shop fyi social vip xyz live club site live space website me world io fun cloud today design app work tech cc biz

Now that's eevblog.fun  ;D

See here for a 1918×11577 JPEG image (2,100,214 byte file) of what I see when viewing this thread.  This is with the modified easylist.txt, with the two offending rules commented out, and my own blocking rules (as I described above) enabled in my personal rules.

Edit: The JPEG is a bit blurred, so here is the same screenshot in PNG format, 4,179,616 bytes.

When I post, I often scroll the window down so that the animated emoticons don't bother me.
