Title: Electronics industry being smashed by you know what
Post by: ocset on April 04, 2021, 03:46:13 pm
Hi,
We are seeing electronics dying off in UK now, due to covid restrictions.
I travel regular from China to Uk in support of an electronics import business.
I never got sick from covid.
My poor Aunty tragically passed away in UK, being put down as covid, but we all knew she unfortunately died of her long term health problems , not covid.

Covid was in China in dec 2019, possibly before.
There is much travel from China to UK...so covid was in UK from at least jan 2020.
So why was the UK death rate, from 1st Jan 2020 , to march 27th 2020, less than the 5 year average?
(153,868 vs 150,057 as attached)

This is noteable from ONS statistics available to all on gov.uk

Meanwhile electronics is being decimated

People haven’t been going out as much, doing things, so they’re on average being exposed to fewer accidents and fewer other communicable diseases. The COVID protections have had a noticeable effect on other diseases like the flu. Additionally, it seems a lot of people have been drinking a lot less alcohol. All in all, a somewhat “safer” lifestyle at the moment.

But sure, COVID is just another thing narrowly, deliberately targeting the UK electronics industry...  ::)

Bring the industry over to Australia. ;-) We have virtually no COVID and life has been back to normal for some time. The film industry here is booming because they can actually get out and film.

Meanwhile electronics is being decimated
Given your reputation my guess is that the decline has more to do with finding good people rather than other influences. Without good people there is no way to have a viable industry. I get offers from headhunters to work in the UK in the electronics industry regulary. The jobs are there; the people not so much appearantly.

My industry is booming.  I keep getting job offers and contract work and have so little time.
So I don't know that Covid is that harmful for EE's.  And we get to do all the work from home so my fuel/electric bill this month has been so low (makes me reconsider owning a car!)

The way Covid has short term fucked the electronics game is the dislocations in the supply chain making parts sourcing a shitshow.
Basically an ungodly mix of 'just in time' and parts speculation, lots of 'no stock' even when shopping directly with TI.

I am seeing plenty of work out there, so little evidence of anything much being decimated.

Please do not judge the UK engineering talent by the maker of unreliable streetlights and dubious LED drivers.

All is fine in France and USA electronics, just some logistics and usual shortage in AKM, and other ICs,

no idea what you refer to.
