Electronics industry in Australia
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:49:01 am »
I guess this question would be for anyone in Australia. I'm curious to know how the electronics industry in Australia is, both in terms of jobs but also in terms of parts availability, like stores full of electronic components for us electronics hobbyists to go crazy in. im playing with the idea of moving to Australia, more specifically, Queensland coast. I am currently working as a pcb assembler/soldering tech, and im hoping to find similar work, i just don't know whats available in Queensland, i would also like to be able to run down to the nearest parts store and pickup whatever parts i might need for my projects (those last minute "whoops, i forgot to order that from digi/mouser" parts), but i dont know if such stores exist in Australia. Any help would be appreciated, and thank you all in advance for your help.

There is always a job if you are good enough.
QLD wouldn't be my first pick though, jobs are roughly in order of Sydney/Melbourne (the big two), Adelaide/Perth, and maybe Brisbane a bit behind that.
Why would you want to be a bloody Queenslander? :P

There is Jaycar for parts (many stores) and a couple of Altronics stores for hobby stuff, but there is Farnell and RS as well who both other free next day delivery.

Dave.

Figured a bloody Queenslander was better then a bloody American. The reason i chose QLD was because i have a friend there, really the only person i know in Aus other then you Dave, but im guessing i can't stay at your house for a few weeks while i look for a job. This is all still just an idea, but im definitely ready to leave the US though, lol.

As democratic nations we end up with the governments we collectively elect. If bad governance is of particular concern then Australia and Queensland are far from the well managed utopias they may appear to be. Queensland in particular has no senate at a state level and that is allowing some weird (self-serving) legislation to occur.

All that said Australia still offers some pretty good living despite the efforts of politicians various. Hell here in NSW we even let a Yank become premier, although she has now been relieved of that responsibility by popular vote.

Take Daves video blog on TSA here in the US, then apply that same bullshit to everything the government touches, not just airport "security". Australia may not be perfect, but i think it will be a step in the right direction, a lot better then it is here anyways. As far as getting in, it looks like i either need to get married to an Aus or get a degree/certification in a needed skill, other then that im screwed pretty much lol. i guess im used to the US's really relaxed immigration laws, anyone can pretty much just move here and look for any job they want. i was hoping i could just move to Australia and live with my friend for awhile while i found a job. guess its time to go get that EE degree!!

Not that I'd recommend it but it's a commonly held belief that a boat trip from Indonesia to Christmas Island claiming refugee status from the Obama regime could improve your chances.

dont know if this still hold true or not, but Christmas island might not work anymore: "The former Howard Government later secured the passage of legislation through the Australian Parliament which excised Christmas Island from Australia's migration zone, meaning that asylum seekers arriving on Christmas Island could not automatically apply to the Australian government for refugee status."

Ah but look what the current lot is up to! Sadly it has little to do with attracting skilled professionals to darken our shores on a permanent basis.
But hell with all our industry heading offshore, why not cut out a step and apply for a position with Altium in China?

Actually that is a Chinese Gooseberry. Next thing NZ'ers will be claiming they invented the pavlova!
Does anyone know how many of them little birds it takes to make a tin of boot polish?

These are also Kiwis

Over here we call them door staff. (Not in those shoes bro!!)  ;D
