Electronics porn for wall decoration?
« on: August 13, 2018, 08:31:22 am »
Hi everyone!

I want to put up a painting/ picture on my wall; I love electronics so why not have something depict electronics?

I’ve searched around on google and this forum but couldn’t find anything that satisfied my needs, so I’m turning to you guys!

Post the best electronics porn you got that is suitable to be mounted in a frame on the wall.
Once I find one that I really like ill have it printed out on canvas and frame it!

If you're after a single print, might I recommend the old Chart of Electromagnetic Radiations. I have a huge one at home and a smaller one at work (as does Dave).

Although ordering from Imagekind is expensive, wait until the sales are on. I saved 50% during Labor Day.

If you want to print them yourself, there are links to various files in the threads HERE and HERE.

If you're looking for more of a "whole room" approach, I absolutely love what this guy has done.

Thanks for this timeless classic! Its definitive a nice piece but not exactly what I was looking for, might stick it on the wall as well, who knows!

How about a clock to an original design?

For ideas http://www.chronoart.com/ or https://www.getdigital.co.uk/Tix-Clock.html or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mengenlehreuhr

I'm sure you could come up with something interesting.

I've gotten both paper and metal prints of some the various macro photos of gear that I've taken.  The metal prints (printed on thin sheets of aluminum) are nice in that they are ready to hang; the paper ones must be mounted and framed.

Here are some examples:

Prints (20 x 30"; ~50 x 75 cm) before matting and framing:

Framed tube and wire wrapped backplane prints (It's tough to get good photos of them in the frames due to the reflections):

Following are metal prints

Tubes in an OTL audio amplifier; print is 12 x 24":

Detail of above, showing corner and how the mount stands it off the wall slightly:

Photo of a Dynaco ST-70 clone amplifier; print is 12 x 18":

Photo of a box of carbon comp resistors (11 x 14"):

There are a few more that I haven't gotten to hang yet; one of these years I'll get to it.

If it jams, force it.  If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway...

Most of them are here, buried in the various galleries:
https://pmanning.smugmug.com/Electronics

Some others are mixed in in miscellaneous/other:
https://pmanning.smugmug.com/Other/Miscellaneous/

And there are a few electronics close ups in the macro gallery:
https://pmanning.smugmug.com/Macro/

Feel free to look around in there, and if you see something you like let me know what it is/they are, and I'll send you the image file(s) so you can get them printed yourself.  Like a shorted capacitor, no charge.  (I'm a dope - I never sell anything...)

Some additional info - the mounted paper prints were done on by Adoramapix in NYC on a gloss Kodak 'metallic' paper.  Photos of them don't do them justice; they really do seem to have a glow to them.  <edit to add - I bought the frames and mats separately and did the paper print mounting myself - I think you can also get them pre-framed, but then they'll be big bucks.>

The metal ones can be had in various finishes ranging from matte white to gloss silver; the Dynaco one is gloss silver, IIRC, and the OTL tubes are printed on a matte white, as are the resistors.  The metal ones have come from either Adorampix, BJ's Photo or a company called Aluminyze.  These likely won't be much good to you folks down under, but I'm sure there are similar photo printing companies there, too.  (Search for something along the lines of 'aluminum photo prints', or 'metal prints', things like that.)  The aluminum ones seem expensive until you stop to consider that you don't need to buy a frame and mat, and go to the trouble of mounting them.  They're still $$, but that makes the cost a bit easier to justify.  That and I wait until they have specials on them; sign up for the coupons and they will occasionally have 35-45% off sales, and some do a first order discount.

In the late 70s Burr-Brown produced a calendar, which obviously fits the specification precisely.

There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Start collecting old hardware, clean it up, frame it, and display it on the wall.

I also have various electronic sculptures I have made on my walls.
