Electronics repair channels on YouTube - recommendations?
« on: March 08, 2023, 10:35:40 pm »
Besides EEVBlog of course, do you have any favorite electronics repair channels on YouTube? For example:

Mend It Mark - only recently found this guy and love his channel - he's informative, entertaining and does some really nice work (https://www.youtube.com/@MendItMark )

Uncle Doug - always a pleasure to watch this guy work (https://www.youtube.com/@UncleDoug/ )

Mr Carlson's Lab - takes his time and goes into great detail (https://www.youtube.com/@MrCarlsonsLab )

and that's just three off the top of my head.

What are some of your favorites?

CuriousMarc. Does some quite in-depth repairs in collaboration with others. Mostly vintage computers, NASA hardware and HP equipment.

The Signal Path (Shahriar), forum user Hugoneus. Repairs test equipment, and will usually go in into the theory of operations of the equipment he's repairing.

I can say which ones cannot recommend. Those youtubers who play overexcitement, make grimaces on the camera, do not mute the audio when aligning receivers with RF signal gen, who riducule the old equipment they are restoring and who do not clean dust from it before poking it with their magic screwdriver.

Jerry Walker does excellent videos mostly on older computer gear. He's doing an HP9845B computer at the moment. Has good educational content about machine operation.

Branchus Creations might be worth a look if older Macintoshes are your thing.

I've enjoyed many of the streams listed above, especially Curious Marc (and Applied Science, though that's not so much repair).

However, recently I've been watching shango066, who mostly works on old TVs and radio receivers. They're not something I've looked at for years and don't really want to start on again, but his perspective on them - he's mostly doing a fast debug to find out if theyre worth properly restoring - and the history he knows make the videos interesting.

IanScottJohnston - repairs a lot of test equipment, also frequents this forum.

Marco Reps - also repairs test equipment from time to time, some metrology stuff too.

FeedbackLoop - mostly A/V and test equipment repairs.

JoulesperCoulomb - a good back-catalogue of videos repairing 8-bit computers, and some test and audio gear. Hasn't posted any videos in a few years, though. His presentation style reminds me of 1980s Open University programs, if anyone knows what I mean. :)

Adrian's Digital Basement - 8/16-bit computer repair.

I'll probably get some crap for this, but I find Shango066's channel very entertaining.  The focus is primarily on getting old tube televisions, radios and hifi systems that have been sitting out in the weather for decades running well enough to watch or listen (as opposed to restoration).  He does this with a bare minimum of equipment, and often tests capacitors by running an audio signal through them and judging their health by the frequency filtering listening to the amplified signal.

Will you learn electronic theory? No.  Will you be entertained? Yes  :P  That said, I did pick up a few things watching him work on transistorized radios.

EDIT - seconding Mr. Carlson, CuriousMarc and Adrian's Digital Basement.  +12voltvids

AvE is also a hysterical smart guy, tends to deal with the mechanical side of electrical stuff.

Just noticed - nobody has mentioned Louis Rossmann?  Granted he's become a bit more social/political commentary than just Macbook repairs, but still pretty good and an advocate for Right To Repair.

Alan is great.  He has some clips on basic stuff and all the way to using scopes and other test equipment and how to use them for different things.
Very informative stuff on his back to basics series. I believe he is ex Tectronix.
Mr. Carlson is great as well. If you join his Patreon page, you get access to test equipment he designs. Great stuff.

Mend It Mark - only recently found this guy and love his channel - he's informative, entertaining and does some really nice work (https://www.youtube.com/@MendItMark )

Agreed, his channel popped up a few days ago in my Youtube feed.

It's really well produced, and I have no idea how he manages to chuckle all the time, and keep his perma smile. I wasn't sure if I'd tire of it, but I've found quite the opposite. It's total nerd entertainment. He has a great workshop too, with a good proportion of his TE being middle aged if not older, showing that you don't need the latest gear to be productive.

I think I might suggest that he invests in soldering tweezers for the SMD work he does.

His biggest crime (tongue deeply embedded in cheek) is he still uses that manky old solder sucker: I haven't used one of those for 30 years!

I find his videos highly entertaining and educational, but then I am a total nerd.

As long as we're ok with self-promotion... I have a handful of repair videos up https://www.youtube.com/@fenugrec5697/videos , probably ranks me in the bottom 1% of the barrel - fine with me, just sharing less-common repairs.

Not everybody has Shariar's luck and buys some busted-up TE where the only problem is a bad N connector or disconnected harness : ))

I'm not sure what your definition of "many" is, because Steve's done only a handful of repair videos in the last few years. While his channel is excellent, Steve doesn't really do repairs; his channel is mostly focused on circuit design and build, as well as equipment review.

Guys there is already a large sticky list of electronics related youtube channels in the "other blogs" forum. Ez24 is not actively posting at the moment. FanOfeeDIY offered in the past to maintain it if required. Perhaps you should be posting and adding the new ones to the list there.
