element14 retroactively gave me a 400 day lead time
« on: February 04, 2022, 01:27:09 am »
I needed a JTAG debugger for an upcoming project. Nothing commercial, so the J-Link Edu seemed like a good option. At the time it was in stock at most of the places you'd expect, but I was already placing an order with element14 so I popped it in my cart instead of paying for separate shipping from another place. A day later I get confirmation that stock has been assigned to my order with an estimated delivery date.

Fast forward to today: I've received the rest of my order and was keen to start the project, so I check the order status and realise the J-Link hasn't shipped yet. On their website it has status "Contact us for more information", so I give them a call. It turns out that for some reason they no longer have stock and they estimate they'll have more stock in April... 2023. I have no idea why they didn't think it'd be useful to send me an email or something before it was sold out everywhere.

Anyway, I just wanted to rant. If you need something critical to a project then maybe stay away from element14.

If anyone knows any good J-Link alternatives that'd be great too.

Last month I ordered a 500A contactor on 5-6 days delivery, about 10 days after the order was accepted I got an email saying my credit card had been declined and would I like to continue with the order, after phoning my bank and confirming nothing was wrong with my card I told them where to stick the order, they have definitely got worse.

What is the micro?
Can get a bluepill and reprogram it as a black magic probe. Or get a jlink clone.

Worse is if you finally get the product and it is defective

Some years ago I bought six expensive Honeywell Airflow sensors from Element 14 for around $250 each. All of them were defective. The defects were proven to be caused by Honeywell. I contacted Element 14 who said I have to contact Honeywell. I contacted Honeywell and they said I have to contact Element 14. This flip-flop buck-passing went on for about six months and I gave up in the end. Legally, it was Element 14 who should have taken them back and provided a full refund.

Since that episode, I have avoided Element 14.
