How many tabs do you keep open in your web browser?
« on: February 23, 2019, 10:25:42 pm »
I can't really say myself, too many to be bothered to count. All I can say is that Firefox 56.0.2 is currently using 2.8GB RAM.

I don’t know how many it is now, since Safari no longer warns when quitting. But back when it did, my known record was “Are you sure you want to quit? You have 121 tabs open in 89 windows.”

Currently Chrome eating 5 GB of RAM. Have seen it eating well over 10 GB.

One or two. But if I'm feeling particularly cheerful on a given day maybe 3. To have any more open if not absolutely needed is just dumb and a waste of computer resources IMHO.

And when I'm done I CLOSE my browser and let the computer sleep.

A lot. Until I loose the overview, or simply have enough. Then I close it all. Can be easily 30+

Since I apparently have a feeble brain for multitasking, I typically have 1 maybe 2 open. At most maybe 5 (when comparing online datasheets/pricing etc). Anything of any importance/usefulness gets bookmarked.

cheers,
george.

Zero. I open a fresh window for every webpage. That way, if one webpage "goes wrong" for some reason and I have to close that window, I don't lose more than that one window. Happens a lot more than you'd think, I presume because of poor QC on website design.

If you're using chrome, it automatically launches new processes as required. Not sure what the heuristics are but it's definitely not new window.

I use FireFox. It does open multiple processes, each of which has many (sometimes dozens) of threads, but there doesn't seem to be a linear correlation between windows and processes. I just tested that, and opening a new (third) window created two new processes... but a second new (fourth total) window didn't create any, and neither did a third new (fifth total) window. Maybe when I get some free time :-DD I'll run some tests trying to understand the relationship between open windows, processes, and threads. I did note that there was no process/thread difference between Ctrl-N (new window) from an existing window versus freshly clicking on the desktop icon - so it appears that Firefox is designed to have a single parent copy of the application running, to which all such requests are routed. (I've written Windows apps both ways, what's best depends upon what you're trying to do.)

But in any case, the reason I open separate windows is simply to provide some insurance against a single failed webpage. As a wild guess, I wonder if certain plugins are "shared" across all tabs within a given window, resulting in a series-wired Christmas light scenario where "if one goes out, they all go out". Maintaining separate windows eliminates this interdependency.

I don't recall the exact details, but in Firefox you can configure the number of processes, otherwise it will create them up to a limit relative to the number of cores available (or virtual cores, a.k.a., threads). The browser gets a process, the render engine gets one, the script engine gets one, etc.

If I run into a badly behaving site, some tabs will crash, but not the browser as a whole, so I just have to hit the refresh/reload button to fetch the page again (i.e., the tabs are still there with the URL of the page prior to the tabs crashing).

Those with 5 or more GB RAM usage, are you all using Chrome? With approximately 400 tabs open, Firefox is currently only consuming 1.7 GB with four processes running.

Tabs have, for many years now, replaced bookmarks for me. They maintain state as well as some browsing history, which bookmarks don't.

Does the browser restore all of your open tabs if the browser crashes, or you have to restart the machine?

Good question, IDE. All my tabs are maintained between sessions and through crashes using the Session Manager plugin. Otherwise, I'd be instantly put off from having so many of them. Prior to that plugin, though, I did experience the browser sometimes failing to restore its session.

How many tabs? ALL of them! But yeah i tend to have over 100 tabs all the time spread over 3-15 browser windows.

For a long time i was using Firefox Developer Edition because back in the old times this was the only one available in a 64bit version so that i didn't have problems with the 32bit version running into the 2GB RAM limit. But then i got used to it so i still use the developer edition of Firefox.

It depends on the hour of the day an on many other factors: the wind, the temperature, the humidity, the phase of the moon... Anyway, never counted how many tabs I do keep open, because I close them all at the end of the day.

Kind regards, samuel Lourenço
