Embed YouTube video code?
« on: November 11, 2015, 08:51:27 pm »
Anyone know what code to use to embed a video in a post?

I tried a number of things I found by Google, but was unable to get a video embedded.

Simply make the [ url ] tags and put the full video link inbetween.

Alternatively, if you just want to link the video, no preview, use a url shortener service:

like this

Try to quote my message to see how I've done it.
<fellbuendel> it's arduino, you're not supposed to know anything about what you're doing
<fellbuendel> if you knew, you wouldn't be using it

Tried this code....

Code: [Select]
[html]
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/n3T007W-IAg?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
[/html]

Like this one....

I see code that looks like this.....but it does not seem to work in my post.
Code: [Select]
[url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGxUXg1fQCs]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGxUXg1fQCs[/url]
[/quote]

Ahhh, I think I got it now. The preview function does not seem to work, but when I post, it all works.

Thanks!

Ah, the quote apparently changes it. Let's try this way (I put tiny spaces to avoid making actual URL tags):

[url ]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGxUXg1fQCs[/url ]
<fellbuendel> it's arduino, you're not supposed to know anything about what you're doing
<fellbuendel> if you knew, you wouldn't be using it

That is quicker and it was my first try.....the Preview option was not working so I thought I was doing it wrong. Should have been brave and just posted it.  |O

Anyone know what code to use to embed a video in a post?

Just paste the URL
This forum has a plugin installed that detects Youtube URLs and converts it into an embedded player.

You have to use the full YT URL for it to show automatically in a post. e.g.,

https://youtu.be/FZN0PBBzEHw <- this is the short form and doesn't work

This is the full form for the same video (I just pasted the full URL, no tags etc):

There is more to the embedding/streaming process than many people think. Especially seek in a video, that requires some behind the scenes magic. The HTML 5 spec and modern browsers make it a lot easier.

As Dave says, his blog CMS software creates a youtube "player" in the web page whenever it sees a raw YouTube URL.

That sure is nice. Your @eevblog videos sure are looking good these days. Crisp, they convey an awful lot of info.

No its not, we can get you started right now.

Do you have a machine you can run a web server on? Even a Raspberry pi will do fine. We can save the files on a SD card.

I can walk you through getting a development machine set up. Its more useful to use a web server than files on your local disk for a number of reasons. There is a site w3schools.com that has extensive learning HTML resources.

The HTML used by youtube or other video hosting sites can be deconstructed to see how the controls work.

Its much easier once you do it and see it working, then some psychological barrier is broken and you just start getting your hands wet, seeing it work,  and its suddenly fun. When you see a site that uses some feature you like, just save everything to a folder.. everything you can grab. the tool "wget" is useful for this. Graphics can be done using free software tools like Gimp and Inkscape. And you need a text editor that you like. What platform do you want to use for authoring?

No Python required for basic HTML, I promise. I learned HTML from a few basic documents written by Tim Berners-Lee in the early 90s. Back then HTML was so simple small children could understand it and did. They could be creating hyperlinks in 15 minutes.

Nothing is more fun than teaching HTML to children. If they can use a computer they can write HTML. Most HTML is rarely used. Don't be intimidated by all that stuff.

Hypertext is a more natural form of writing than flat text (files)
You can convey thoughts with more fidelity to their meanings.

At least I think so.

Thanks lot for your support.
But I'm a mechanical engineer and will probably never need HTML

Maybe.

But I used to say that about SQL way back in the 80s, but when I got into it I found I liked it a lot and could do all sorts of useful stuff with it. A real swiss army knife..
