erased post
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:11:00 pm »
I was reading a post named: "How not to save a country" which i think  it's very interesting.
For those of you that haven't read it yet it's about what is happening in Greece.

Well, after reading it, i decided to post one about what's going on in Mexico.
But it seems that has been erased. Perhaps i went too far by adding some links with extremely violent content.

If that's the case (I think it is) i just want to make clear that i never wanted to offend people by doing that.

Please Dave, could you confirm this. I promise next time i will avoid adding any offensive content.

I saw the flagged report, but not the post, it had already been deleted by one of the moderators.
So I cannot comment on the content myself, but I trust it just went too far for one of the mods to have to nuke the post.
As much as I hate deleting posts, there is no need to link to any sort of extreme violence on an electronics forum, unless you are say beating the crap out of a cheap multimeter or something.

Dave.

Nuking a post without leaving a notice and notifying the poster is bad form, however, unless it's just spam. It sounds like deleting the links (I read the post, but didn't bother checking out the links) would have been sufficient. Yes, it was a political post which is way off topic for this forum and I usually ignore them, but you stimulate these kinds of off-topic rants (minus the violence).

I agree, just remove the link and even though there's no obligation to notify the poster, the moderator should in case they think it's a network error and repost it. I've reposted a deleted post on another forum simply because I didn't see why it should've been deleted and put it down to a network error rather than the moderator.

Notifying the user is also useful to provide motivation, so that the user knows which line they crossed.

What's worse is when two moderators have different ideas of what's acceptable and what is not. Ideally the administrator will set down some guidelines but anything is open to interpretation.

On the other forum I moderate, I only delete spam and anything really bad like porn, racism and violence. It does depend on the context though, I might allow something some would consider to be mildly pornographic if it's related to the topic and it's educational rather than just porn for the sake of porn.

In this case, I saw the post but didn't click on the link so I don't know whether it should've been deleted or not. However this is just my opinion and it's what Dave thinks that counts as it isn't my forum - I'm just ranting.

It was interesting first post but it devolved into people calling each other and each other's countries words that I'd rather not say. It could've been an interesting discussion..but the foul smelling side of humanity took it for a joyride over a cliff.

Glad it was taken care of before some feelings were hurt. Hopefully noone's mad about it. Opinions are like asses.

Bah, you can't say anything these days without offending someone or other which would be a bad reason for removing apost in my opinion.

Hi Pablo,

I was going to rant about freedom but the post is still alive, yes it has some verbal violence but it is acceptable in such context, and specially if you consider some people has been brain washed by the media...

Anyways I still going to rant about freedom because I believe Dave and many of us believe in it, of course there is going to be controversy, I think there is a lot prejudice going on and the only way to get rid of it is to talk about it openly, there is more to culture than "siestas" and tequila in mexico, baguettes in france or cheese burgers in USA...
Debate is good, It always is, we cant force people to constantly behave politically correct...

Regards.

Everything in context I guess. Everyone knows when they're being unreasonable or offensive..some people just want to blame political correctness. Manners should always pull opinions towards ground  ;).

I'm always offending someone! :P

Everyone knows when they're being unreasonable or offensive.
I seriously doubt that. I know that certain people have no idea they've offended someone.

There are also people who take offence when none is intended.

That's very often the case with things I say (not just on the blog, but in everyday life).
Because I lack any and all tact so I'm told :o, and I just tell it like it is, many many people find that offensive, when to me it's just passionate enthusiasm with (usually) the intention of trying to help or discuss things. Some people like me for it, but probably the majority think I'm the rudest SOB on the face of the planet.
Very rarely do I mean to cause offense, yet things I say and apparently the way I say them are very often taken as offensive, very often to my astonishment.
Oh well, that's me. I ain't changing to suit some politically correct world.

Dave.

I tend to believe the people who get offended by the slightest thing are looking for a fight but the people who are actually offensive know when they are being offensive.

I might be wrong though.

Good man!

Question - when we talk of a politically correct world, what part of the political spectrum is that world in - Left or Right wing?
You can do anything with the right attitude and a hammer.

The right wing world of course, who can kiss my left butt cheek.
But the world is not binary of course.

Here's some tips for mods from someone who's been a forum admin for close to a decade:

If the post contains information other than porn and/or gore, no matter how politically charged and you nuke it instead of editing links and PMing the poster - you are a forum Nazi and as soon as people find out who you are they will secretly hate you which will ultimately lead to the loss of your mod rights.

If you are "too busy" to read and edit posts, if you just want to play god with only "kill/not kill" options,  you have no business being a moderator. Mods are worker bees, they are like public servants, not medieval executioners.

Topics that spiral into ad hominem attacks need to be closed (NOT deleted), but only AFTER you post a message at the end on why you closed it. If you just close it secretly, like a pussy, you piss a lot of people off and as I said, you cross the line from being a neutral mod to a forum nazi.

If you are, as a mod, personally offended by the content (e.g. someone calls Queen of England a cunt), please remember that no one but you absolutely cares about your "offendedness", it's OK to be offended, people get offended every day, and historically there is not a single case of anyone getting ill or dying from being offended. No one but you cares. And if you chose to delete a post or topic based on you being offended, you overstepped your bounds and need to be stripped of MOD rights.

Dave,

be fair to the right butt cheek. Have them kiss both sides. :)
