How well do the algorithms work? How fast are the upgrading the AI (moores law speeds) to get down to 99% accuracy? What else could we use it for? A big thing that scares me is all the data collecting isn't private and kept safe, it's on billboards (literally in one case I knew) and at the finger tips of data collecting companies. How much does each lead cost? Are there different grades of data accuracy i.e. 50%, 90%, 1 sigma 2, sigma 3 etc. I also wonder how you can buy this data. Can you amend it? Doubtful there is a company banks use to see if your credit worthiness meets the requirements to open one and it's a "fourth" credit bureau most have never heard of called Chex Systems, every bank uses it. According to them I am dead; died a few years back, left behind a husband, and three kids, it was tragic and huge loss to the community. OH WAIT! I'm not dead. How do you fix this? Well you can't really. They have no phone number or customer service for non banks and from what I have seen to prove you are alive you have to send them TONS of accurate person info, which actually makes the problem worse. I'm stuck with the three bank accounts I opened before that tragic day, which sucks because I use credit unions not banks, everyone should I don’t know why you would choose fees for profit vs lower costs and interest rates. It's obviously sold in chunks. Really I don't know how much the bank makes off my data is it like $0.26 a lead or is like $20? You should have the option of paying the company what ever they make off the data to keep it private, they make just as much money but your privacy is restored. Yes it should be optional if you want your life sold to the highest bidder but in my country that’s not going to happen so compromise has to made: basically you have the "freedom" to determine what you info contains and goes.
There are very little laws in place in the US and in fact the laws are written in a way that encourages it being let out of the genie bottle (legal for ISP to read your email and sell your social security number).It's like trying to put the fix-a-flat goo back through the little nozzel and the orange clown is too dumb to expect this HUGE growing problem to get fixed like SOPA and that other BS but I don't want to hear politics I want to know the technical end; which algorithms work, do you have to buy algorithms or code and implement them, themselves? What of your data, if any, is the company obligated to give you. I know in Europe if you ask face book for your info they send you about 1,000 pages of data, that’s scary and similar to all the location data I got for Uber. I took uber this morning and it KNEW I had a doctors appointment, and it knew I had to go to the pharmacy for the second trip, and also knew where home was. Convenient yes, risk(privacy) vs reward(saving 10 seconds typing on the screen? Not even close to worth it. They had all this location data on me HUGE amounts I have since learned to shut off the app after your trip or will keep recording, strengthening the accuracy of the algorithms results. America: Give me Convenience or Give me Death, Benny Boy Franklin is rolling in his grave so much now he needs his bearings replaced less his grave explodes from centrifugal force. You always hear stories of "you can buy lists of people who have genital herpes and alcoholics" Sounds Great! Where can I buy it? How much do they cost? What are names of these companies? How do I get off this list? The biggest offender is use your real name and an online dating site. For many people who have got married through craigslist will have to give up lots of privacy since you can do dating on craigslist because our congress doesn't understand technology. Millions of meetings of people are no more because maybe, someone answered a date on craigs list and went into human trafficking, very possible even probable but still that takes away millions for a handful of people who were too naïve. Collective punishment.
Who are Facebooks biggest customers? The people who buy ad space? I think they said they keep the data for themselves at the moment, then pitch to advertisers that they are targeted leads and since you can know everyone's darkest secrets by analyzing face book accounts, they might sell products like that. A real 1984 scenario is possible from this if the NSA and the usual suspects start profiling people who are unhappy with the government and they start using the algorithms to find who are guilty of freethinking or thought crimes. What scares me most is we have a huge terrorist attack because say, the president is totally incompetent, and we get a Patriot Act 2.0 where judges are replaced by computers programed by the best psychologists in the BAU (That’s not just a TV show it’s a real division). As an aside under the trump admin there is an organization being set like the CIA but different in that the CIA isn't powerful enough and has to follow rules like basic human rights laws, and is being set up by multibillion dollar companies. (This is real The Young Turks did a show on it, definitely not fake news). This is the perfect organization to collect data and use it for profits while stomping on people who get caught up in the algorithm. I'm sure many countries right now are probably starting programs like this too.
So we can't stop this all we can try to do is make habits with our phones and computers to offset it. The best way I have found is to make Facebook and other social media accounts that are like you, in your town, your age, but not you. Make a similar spelled name to your and just put in random pictures of someone else's facebook or stock images, and create a life style that is kind of like you. This should be enough to muddy the waters and throw people especially if you are the only person in the country with that name and typing your name into google reveals your whole life. I apparently have a criminal record too! Several years ago I had some Russians visiting me and while I was parked they drank vodka in the back seat on new years. Some assshole or should I say "Good Samaritan" called the cops. I almost talked the cop out of not giving me a ticket but this guy and his mom (45 and living with mum) was adamant that something be done, and the cop started to get irritated mainly at the other guy, but to shut him up he wrote me a ticket. That’s easy to beat in court I used to act as my own lawyer when I was a kid so I didn't pay but chose to fight it. Right before it was my turn to talk to the judge I had a massive seizure and woke up in a hospital. The ticket has been in "limbo" since and according to the internet I now have a record. Fucking horrible considering all the works and jobs I have ever had require a spotless criminal record around other things. I have no idea how to fix this and it always pops up on the internet. I would NEVER dare post what I'm typing now on facebook or any of those other things.
This is getting too long but it’s a fascinating topic as someone who studied sociology and psychology in college.
