Fast internet connection is money
« on: November 04, 2016, 03:45:57 pm »
Fast internet connection is money, and it is also a joke to me.

I have just got this email from Freelancer:

I'm seeking someone in Melbourne who has NBN on their computer. I really, really need to transfer 40gb of mxf files via the net. Unfortunately I live in an area without NBN. So, if you're in Carlton, Yarraville, Brunswick or some new building in the city, please, offer to help me.

So he can't find a place for 40GB of video files? I mean I have a few 80GB SATA drives sitting here doing nothing, get one of those...

If I missed the point, I honestly didn't get it.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

Can't they use something like dropbox and make a couple accounts? Heck, youtube is an option too.

I don't think you're getting it... apparently Australian internet is so slow that transferring 40GB without NBN is inconceivable ;)

He/She wants a faster internet connection, not the slow old ADSL connection what most people are using here in Australia.

Let me show you the speed test result of my internet connection and you will understand.  ;D

Here's my Xfinity speed test in California.  We are blessed by pretty reasonable speed.  There is a speed grade above this but it gets expensive.  300 Mbps is adequate.
Years ago, I had ADSL and it was grim.  I had 4 dedicated IP addresses (very cool) but the links were down more than they were up.  Once we got cable networking, I ran away from ADSL as fast as I could.

Probably quicker to mail it if you have 1Mbps upload (for example). 90 hours.

Sorry, I don't understand , with  ADSL  from 5 MB of download , he or she  can't  transfer 40 GB. I don't believe .

I downloaded  files of 40GB of size, with adsl 6 MB, 3 MB and 1 MB, it could late 1 or 2 days.

Now it doesn't compare when before  i downloaded 2 or 3GB with a modem 56kbaud, i could pass  2 or three month for finishing the  download  :-DD.

Download is not upload. If you don't have fibre or similar fast upload you're probably on ADSL where you probably have somewhere around 1000Kbps at best.

Yes, it will take almost one week if I use my internet connection to upload 40GB files, and the download speed will be unbearable while full speed uploading.  |O

BTW: We are massively using Wi-Fi, here in Czech Republic, for last (ten) mile problem, just because ADSL is overpriced.

Wi-Fi is a local solution, not a wide area solution (WLAN vs WAN)

None that I know of.  Xfinity (Comcast) claims to have 1 million WiFi hotspots in California alone.  These are unencrypted but a password is required.
The reason there are so many is that Xfinity has turned residential WiFi routers into public hotspots - often without telling the customer.
There have been some battles about this practice but I haven't followed along.

Simply is more easiest to resolve than the commission's bank, automatically you  go down  the  wifi contracts.

Well, this is what you can get in central Europe in a city of about 10 000 residents for about 15€ / month. No restrictions, no FuP, no bullshit.

Disclaimer: Measures only ~95mbit, bcs the router I have under my desk is only 100BASE. The house is connected using a fiber (as is mostly common in this area) and the actual speed coming in is about 200 to 600mbps (symmetrical, no upload restriction), depending on daytime and overall local network load.

So don't be fine with getting ripped off by a suckers from state monopoly companies, you can fight them. We have already done that, it is possible. We are getting connectivity from a small local civic association.  :-+

//But don't be mistaken, most of the state is still using a shitty DSL. But some improvements are being done, like VDSL and some big companies are also offering cable/fiber connection in some areas for very reasonable prices. It is only problematic in older densly  populated areas like bigger cities, where the infrastructure is old, bad, poorly maintained and cannot be easily upgraded or replaced, like in smaller cities, where there is not much of an issue to dig up whole roads and replace all at once (power, phone, internet, city lighting cables,... - thats also why we do have almost none overhead lines in cities)

I have cable on a standard service plan, with an upload speed of 1.4Mbps (at the moment).  Assuming I could get that consistently, it would take me the best part of 3 days to upload 40GB

Note - this says my service is faster than 79% of all Australia.

Well, it says me I am faster than 98%, but just wanted to make a point, that it is possible, to overcome the "big players" and create and maintain a great internet infrastructure, that does not cost much at all. There is just only small reasonable profit, that goes for building new and maintaining existing. No-one is doing this to get rich - and thats the biggest difference from the standard companies. As I have said, we are a self contained civic association. And I think it might be possible also elsewhere in the world. Just get some good people into it!  :-+

Back in the day, only option better than dialup to my house was ISDN. Of course, web pages weren't filled with video ads and all the junk that makes them load slowly even when you have a 200Mb connection, but I digress. For large downloads, it was almost always faster for me to drive the 20 minutes each way to the office where we had a T3 connection, download on my laptop or to a portable drive, and go back home. On the days I was REALLY smart, I'd first remote into the office, start the download, and then drive over - most things would be finished by the time I got there.

that doesn't say anything about peering though. speedtest usually takes the nearest speedtest server.
My home connected can push a solid 11Mbps to the telus speedtest server, but that rapidly drops off through hops.
My sys/ovh box has 260Mbps to the ovh speedtest server but only 50-60Mbps to shaw's calgary or edmonton speedtest servers.
Randomly, I tested to Australia. The box takes a 0.6-2.0s response time to Australia and download/upload speeds of around 10Mbps...
China is even worse at 1-2Mbps and insanely inconsistent response times >=0.6s.
"This is a one line proof...if we start sufficiently far to the left."

He should compress a few times until it gets to let's say 10MB and then upload.

Maybe get a laptop and find some McDonalds or some location with free wifi and reasonable upload speed around you ?

You could rent some Linux or Windows VPS with enough space for a month just in case free-wifi location limit direct video uploads, and you could split the 40 gig file in 20-50 MB chunks ( use winrar or 7zip to compress with minimal or no actual compression, and option to split archive in chunks) and upload them using ftp to your vps.

Then use Remote Desktop connection to connect to your VPS unpack the big file and upload it again to the final destination.
