A really good video explaining how the teller ulam design works. Fascinating that a youtube scientist can figure this out:

And no those aren't jukeboxes in my avatar.

And what's the point of a such post?
I suggest you lay down on the booze or whatever.
If you want to know the innards of nuclear weapons all you have to do is to download a newest copy of nwfaq from the web.

I've been poking around in that site for about 20 years now.  Carey's write up is just amazing.  I would have thought that much of the detail he presents would be classified to some extent.  I ran reactors on aircraft carriers for a time and found it interesting the similarity between controlled vs uncontrolled fission.
There's no point getting old if you don't have stories.

I find it fascinating. I actually have a whole list of more in-depth videos but I try not to post too much of it since its kind of off topic. They discovered the neutron then less then 10 years later they  mastered it.

Andrei Sakharov and his team also figured it out.

So the idea is to make the reactor go supercritical long enough (without blowing itself apart) to build up a huge amount of energy that gets released. Thankfully even with all the "leaked" info going out, it is one of the harder things to build or at least to acquire the materials to build. Hopefully it will stay that way. We got enough problems in this world without more being added to it.

There's an interesting movie about this narrated by none-other than William Shatner (Boston Legal, Star Trek):

I saw that movie. Extremely interesting.

The DVD had a "Director's cut" with a voice over. He would provide additional insight on many of the scenes.

In particular, during the Edward Teller interview, he mentioned that Dr. Teller only agreed to be filmed if they did the scene on a single take and no editing.
So his lengthy talk, done clearly and without errors or hesitation, was done on a single sitting!
It shows the power and clarity of his mind.

Teller wasn't a pleasant person. He was somewhat of a crybaby and cut and ran when he didn't get his way (which was often). That's how LLNL was started--Los Alamos wouldn't put him in charge of the H-bomb project, so he quit. He never did give Ulam proper credit for his contribution and was effectively shunned by the scientific community after what he did to Oppenheimer during Oppenheimer's hearing regarding his security clearance.

Teller gave a guest lecture for my physics class at Berkeley sometime in the last 70s/early 80s. I thought he came across as a pompous ass.
Complexity is the number-one enemy of high-quality code.

Obviously the overseas members here never saw our old Aussie movie, 'Young Einstein'   ;D
When he finally "Split the Beer Atom" !!!  and later harnessed the energy....   :phew:
Diagonal of 1x1 square = Root-2. Ok.
Diagonal of 1x1x1 cube = Root-3 !!!  Beautiful !!

Teller was a world-class a$$hole, no question about that. But he was also brilliant.

I also think that his testimony against Oppenheimer was driven in large part by jealousy and a CYA attitude during the worst part of McCarthysm.

An excellent film.

And the other films are good too.

Ever see the new, Blu Ray extended edition?
