Title: Flameless heat gun
Post by: nukie on July 22, 2012, 03:17:04 am
I think this is a pretty good tool for heatshrink versus time for a hot air iron to heat up. Do you have one? Is it good?

Sure, they work fine for smaller sizes of heat shrink tubing.

I have a butane soldering iron with a hot air tip. And a hot knife, and a blowtorch, and of course the soldering tips. Very multifunctional. ;)

I just use my Atten 858D. Am I doing something wrong here?

I use a cheap (< $40) paint stripper gun with heat shrink tubing, usually on the low setting.

Yes, you are assuming everyone owns a hot air soldering station   ;)

I use a butane flame torch, I have to move quickly from one side to another to avoid charred results. The end is always uneven shrinkage, well it's okay but not 'hot-air' perfect. I've been doing this for many years. The butane is portable and instant, soldering hot air gun has warm up time. I want something small so it fits into my crowded workspace.

You can avoid the charred results by using a butane hot air tip instead of a flame tip. Same advantages of portable and instant, but more controllable.

Hahaha ;D But besides that. I'm assuming its no harm using the station.

I just use a plastic welding gun on low heat no warm up time and shielded nozzle can be attached if there is something sensitive near.

Does it do something other than burn the butane if it's flameless?

It is a catalytic combustion. First the catalytic material (IIRC platinum) is heated with the flame to a high temperature. Then the flame is cut off and the butane combusts flameless at the hot catalyst.

Warm up time? Try a 858D, 0 warmup time

Not portable.
