Just in time to be made obsolete by the new sensors in the new Flir One...

The good news is that FLIR decided to provide component parts to the public via a retailer. That is a first ? If they continue on that path we will hopefully see the new 160x120 Lepton available in the not too distant future ?

As Mike has shown, these little beauties can be used in the DIY scenario and that opens up a potential world of maker community projects. We may see what SEEK Thermal promised but using a FLIR core that actually performs  :-+

IRISys broke new ground with their low resolution thermal people counters and cameras. and that was with only 16x16 and 32x32 pixel FPA's ! This could be the next step in affordable thermal imaging finding its way into all manner of interesting applications.

I quite thought FLIR would continue to make the LEPTON core hard to obtain. Glad they are seeing the light  ;D

Hard to tell, but is:
http://www.digikey.co.uk/product-detail/en/500-0659-01/500-0659-01-ND/5215153

a variant with a built in shutter? I presume it's actuated separately and has some means of sensing the shutter temperature.

The TG165 has the built in shutter that is driven off of the shutter contacts on the LEPTON. AFAIK the LEPTON commands it to operate autonomously but a command may be sent to the LEPTON to either stop shutter actuation or initiate an immediate FFC event using the shutter.

Availability at Digikey is interesting, but price probably still cost-prohibitive for hobby/makers.

Some maybe, but Sparkfun sold plenty at $349. and the Pureengineering/Groupgets people shifted a few hundred at $200
There are plenty of hobbyists with money to spend!

How well do low resolution thermal cameras work outdoors.

If you had the sensor outside on a farm and there was a cow ~50meters away would you pickup 1-4 pixels clearly showing its body temp or would it just blur together.

I know the expensive highres ones work well outside, but i'm not sure about these cheap ones.
They maybe doing some pixel blurring that would kill this sort of detail.

Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

The issue is the field of view of the lens - the standard lepton is pretty wide. I just ordered the 25 deg one to play with.
An issue is that for longer ranges you'll need a bigger, more expensive lens.
