Fookin scribd
« on: March 23, 2024, 05:02:06 pm »
Dear members,

how about this:
https://www.scribd.com/document/423355865/EEVblog-Electronics-Community-Forum

Scribd and similar websites are really becoming a plague. They host content which is either in the public domain or owned by a company like TI, Analog devices,... All their publications are all freely available. Reporting them is impossible unless you sign up which costs you $10.99.

Reporting them would take a lot of time. Almost every data sheet or app note can be found on scribd...

Of course I can add -site:scribd.com when searching for something. But being lazy, is there some way to automate this by appending for example -site:scribd.com -site:ehow.com -site:...

Some species start the day by screaming their lungs out. Something which doesn't make sense at first. But as you get older it all starts to make sense.

Enforcing copyright is the owner's responsibility.  In other words, you don't have "standing" to complain about it in any judicial court.  The court of public opinion is your only option.  I agree with you, though. I also hate those sites that require cookies just to see the first page.

Even Dave and the posters in the thread in question don't have standing to serve Scribd a takedown notice as our forum rules here state:
Quote
By posting on this public forum you are effectively giving up ownership of the text you wrote - it becomes public domain - people are free to quote it for perpetuity on this forum and other websites, bots are free to archive it and make it available in searches, and the forum owner is free to archive it and restore it if desired. You have no right to demand that what you wrote be removed from all parts of this forum and other people's posts. If you don't like this, don't post to a public forum like this.

Enforcing copyright is the owner's responsibility.

I understand that. The problem is that websites like scribd are in the top search results for documents which are freely available and I would like to exclude those from my search results without typing a list of websites to exclude all the time.

As such I searched with google if something related has been posted on EEVblog. Interestingly the First search results is a link to scribd with someone publishing EEVblog messages... Some people seem to have nothing else to do.

@ shapirus
Sharp response, exactly what I was looking for.

And Pinterest, too. I hate how it pollutes image searches, and how clicking a Pinterest link then doesn’t even contain the (often relevant) image it had a thumbnail for!  :palm:

Even better, here’s the extension’s own page, since most people don’t use Firefox: https://iorate.github.io/ublacklist/
