Format War That Nearly Brought Down Electronics Publishing
« on: June 01, 2023, 09:29:03 am »
the video tape format war article and boycott that nearly brought down electronics publishing.
in 1984 Electronics Australia published an article on the
format war between VHS and Betamax suggesting Betamax had lost
because allegedly a German video tape manufacturer was no longer supporting both formats.
this led to a advertising boycott by Sony of the Magazine and its publishers.
that also allegedly led to job losses and a change of management.

All kind of levels here.

One business rule is that a single income route shouldn't be more than 10%.
Commercial banks have similar mandatory equity ratios.

For oligopolies my take is that one participant should be a non profit or a state controlled.
(state controlled here is indirect only)
Cartels are also finally quite common, if we accept that only small fraction is found.

Now some of us argue against cancel culture.
Would it be different if the group of individuals are behind a single name or entity.
Or if the target, instead of being an individual is a much larger entity.

I guess disproportionality is a key word here.

But was it disproportionate action from Sony, I'd say no, they just tried to stop the flood.
The magazine then was sort of just wrong time in wrong place.
