FORUM: Computing Section
« on: May 26, 2019, 11:24:49 pm »
Someone has suggested a "Computing" section to the forum, and I think it's not a bad idea.
Suggested sections:
General Computing
Embedded Computing
Networking, Communications, Wireless
And the existing vintage section of course.

What say the tribe?

I for one often feel hesitant to post coding stuff on here because it's an electronics forum but lets face it without code we would all be spending hours tweaking pots
so if this encourages programming discussions (not sure if thats your intention) then  :-+

Hmmm.

Embedded computing has a close relationship with electronics.
General computing is well catered for elsewhere; anything here would probably be a pale imitation of content elsewhere. Plus the content elsewhere can be distinctly unappealing, e.g. stackexchange.
Comms, wireless and networking fall between those stools.

Maybe a new embedded computing sub-forum would be beneficial, but there would be overlap with the "micros and fpga" sub forum.

I'd avoid a "me too" general computing section.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

A Computing section sounds like a good idea.
However, I have not seen enough code on the forum to warrant dividing it into sub-sections.

Hmm, yes, the forum should have this somewhere...

Perhaps a combined Embedded, Robotics and Automation section? (Industrial controls and SCADA would also fall into this category.) I think it's important not to create too much segregation but also sufficiently separate topics so people can find posts which interest them. I absolutely think a Networking section (wired and wireless) needs to stand on its own. Not only do you have Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc... but things like LoRa are making more of an appearance as well.

Maybe that's because there isn't a coding section. If you build it he will come as the quote goes.

My general hesitance about partitioning up the forum is that it opens it up to the category nazis. I don't like that. I prefer a more openly embracing community feel where people are welcome to discuss stuff. The TEA thread is an example where the desire for communal discussion is epitomised. Yes, it's way to big and too rambling but it does show that people like that sort of thing.

I don't think it needs to be split up that finely; there's already a "microcontrollers and FPGAs" section.

I have been contemplating building an engineering oriented workstation PC recently. There have been other occasional threads on a similar topic. I was hoping to solicit advise on component selection, motherboards ect from the forum as I don't keep abreast of what is currently good. Where would such a thread go? General chat?  Doesn't seem right.

It's done!
A new computing section.
Categories:

Vintage Computing

let me know what you think.

I'll slowly move over some posts as time permits.

And say high to a new section moderator, Halcyon!

But that's really more low level electronics related than the SBC Arduino/RPi type stuff embedded stuff. I think it's good to separate them.

If you know of any large threads that need moving, please point them out, thanks.

Regardless of how the subsections are named, I think all messages should be electronics related.  e.g.

How do I set up a Linux system?  NO :--

How do I set up a Linux system with GPIB to collect data from my test equipment?  YES :-+

Include physical io stuff like sensors, servos, whatever with Robotics, Automation and Embedded -> Mechatronics?

Yes new sensors tech section will be nice... LIDAR, Infrared, ultrasonic, etc... maybe under Mechatronics / Robotics/Automation...

Good point. Those two crowds don't tend to mix well. ;)

Splendid! It's a rare bit of electronics that doesn't contain some code these days.

Might I suggest moving this thread to there, as an 'about this section' sticky?

You just made me realise that the last 2 projects I've done required code.

Times have changed.
