Title: Forum Header
Post by: sonicj on December 07, 2011, 04:26:32 am
Since I mostly keep the forum open in a tab 24/7, I rarely explore the rest of the site. If the blog header was at the top of the forum I would likely click on it.  So... do any other forum users feel disconnected from the rest of the site, or do I just not know how to use teh internets properly?  ???

Personally I prefer the current uncluttered and clean layout, may be its just me.

Worry the snappiness browsing this forums will be degraded with those pretty headers.

About the links to other eevblog's parts, its currently placed at the bottom, not pretty but not bad either.

I like the clean look, which kinda separates it from the main blog site, and that is intentional.
I don't see a graphic header adding any value, just clutter.
Ideally I'd prefer the forum to be wholly at eevforum.com, but there are various reasons to keep it as-is.

Dave.

Thanks Dave, and also if in the future there is a plan to upgrade this forum, please take a deep consideration before turning this nice & clean forum like those resource hogging javascript/CSS website-type, its a pita to browse.  :(

The only thing I plan to do is update it as SimpleMachines updates.
We switched to SimpleMachines 2.0 sometime back, and I don't anticipate any other major changes will come along any time soon.

it appears the header is all css with less than 1k of images.... you wouldn't notice the difference on dial-up.

no graphic, just a the css menu/logo. i agree there is no value in adding the dave graphic.  the css links & the css logo, on the other hand, add brand consistency while increasing functionality for forum viewers/users. see photo in 1st post.

hmm..... actually, i had my header expanded when i took that screenshot, heres one with it closed.

a eye pleasing, functional css header doesn't have to be a bandwidth/pixel hog. in fact, the css file for the forum index is almost 3x the size as the file for the blog page! (56K vs 20k)  :D  the blog header adds no javascript to my knowledge.  i know what you're saying though... just because a developer knows how to make crap fly across the screen doesn't make it good practice.

Sorry, maybe I was using the wrong terms, not sure what its called. Its just I feel very annoyed by those pesky forums that are using those what I called personally a mouse pointer traps.

Its so damn hard just to move the mouse pointer around without triggering some annoying pop-ups, small windows, small pull-down yada..yada even without clicking them, and even on a fast computer like mine an i7 920 quad and with big bandwidth, the mouse pointer stuttered and sort of freeze for a while whenever it hovered across them, and sometimes the browser was like working very hard just to render a single stupid page because of these craps, really hate this.  >:(

Also it feels like navigating the mouse pointer thru a maze just to avoid them, when what I wanted was just to read the text content peacefully.
