Foxconn sure is unique in the annals of labor:

Its reminiscent of the US during WWII when whole communities serviced military manufacturing, and they had similar problems in those camps.

I used to live north of Oak Ridge and I worked there and in the area. Used to have to go on service calls to Y12 and K25 and I hated it. But I never heard any stories of workers killing themselves over the pressure to perform, or rioting.

People being beaten by guards, forced to work long hours with few breaks and no weekend recreation, living in dorms and eating all their meals from the company store... it's really more like Detroit back before the unions arrived.

Sorry, yes you're right regarding Oak Ridge, I couldn't find photos of other boom towns from WWII fast enough.  The issues were cramped housing, long hours, happened in many other boom towns.  No suicides as a rule, mostly riots, civil unrest, racial tensions, rowdiness.  See riots of 1943:

The zoot suit riots were caused by racial problems, not because of workers being forced into inhumane circumstances. So too with Detroit both in the 40s and the 60s. And so too with LA after the OJ trial and so forth.

Workers in the 40s had protection of the unions. Workers worked long hours (if they chose) but were rewarded for it. What is happening in China is like depression era factories in the US.

I wonder who Apple will get to do their bullwork when trade unions come to China?

As I understand it they are mostly entirely unionized, but the unions are an organ of the communist party and will not protect the individual worker.

If I insult and get killed whose fault is it? Are you serious?

Killing someone over an insult is exactly the bullshit going on in the mideast. Killing someone because you're offended by them is never OK - not that that has anything at all to do with this thread. But the zoot suit riots were not merely over an insult, they started over a murder and took off from there.

The "unions" are an organ of the communist party is exactly the problem. This was also the problem in Poland and we see how well that worked out for the PZPR and the Soviet Union.

Australia is mostly unionised, but the unions are an organ of the communist party a political organisation and will not protect an individual worker.

It's not individual workers who need protection in China - it's all of them.

I wonder how Apple would feel about a three day strike in all their plants? I wonder how sales of their overpriced cellphones would go after days of news broadcasts witnessing overtaxed workers facing down tanks and gunfire as the party leaders called in the army to squash the strikers?

I'm having a really hard time with your english, but I think my answer to you would be I'd tell my kids to tell the tigers to fuck off and walk away. If the tiger don't respect that and comes after them then kill the goddamn tiger.

Being offended doesn't give you an excuse to attack someone with physical force. Duh.

in other word, you (or you tell your kids) dont go infront of tiger front to front. so what are you gonna do? advice your kids or kill all tigers?
Tigers are not extinct all that's happened is the sacking of their coach after a a poor seasons performance. Still will very modern workplaces experiencing encounters with tigers, you have to wonder how it is in any way relevant.

It's not individual workers who need protection in China - it's all of them.

maybe, maybe not, but they certainly don't need any interference from outside.
This is a natural "western world" process and China, chinese workers and their gov must
go that way by its own, like every other modern western world country did before.

I read somewhere that, for a short time, Foxconn employee's contracts had a clause that the employee promises not to commit suicide.  :o The creator of Dilbert could not have made that up!

@poptones:
the Solidarno?? logo is actually a misuse in this case. It's the name of the first Polish trade union which was formed in communist times in Gdansk Shipyard in Poland and they eventually turned over the communism in Poland. They are actually quite active yet today.

No, that is not what happened in the west. Countries heavily influenced each others, and the worker movement spread like wildfire, often riding in parallel with Karl Marx' socialist/communist ideas "Workers of the world, unite!". Even the Vatican was meddling in worker issues at that time ("Rerum Novarum"). Things didn't go their own way but were heavily influenced.

And regarding Chinese unions, well, there is just the All China Federation of Trade Unions. Other unions than ACFTU chapters are illegal, and the chapters are often a charade,  e.g. making a factory owner or an owner's "friend" / pocketed politician the local chapter's chairman.

Yeah yeah, enough with the handwaving mecha, we get it "you offend people you die." Well I'll say it again: fuck off. You don't get special rights because you are offended or because you're a mob. If you're mobbed then that just makes the whole mob in the wrong. Where I come from we had a lot of that stupid thinking, it was called lynching, and they'd hang black folks from trees or set fire to them for simple offenses like whistling at white women. It's wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Get it? Free speech exists for a reason, and people behaving like children over their offense are doomed to be offended again and again until they learn to behave in western culture like respectable adults. If you're offended feel free to hurl some epithets back.

the Solidarno?? logo is actually a misuse in this case.

No, it isn't. You don't have to tell me about Solidarnosc, I have that very same flag right here in my living room. It used to hang on my porch but it's become rather weatherbeaten and I don't want it destroyed, they being rather hard to get here in the US. This one was given to me by a very nice person back in Poland some years ago. It's a great reminder for me of my late father, who was a proud and active union man. We lived just outside Detroit during the Polish uprising, we knew everything that was happening back then and, not only do I remember riding home from school every day with my dad as we listened to the latest news of the strikes, I remember my father walking pickets. One day walkouts were common there back then as a show of support for the Polish workers, Detroit having a quite substantial Polish population.

And what happened there is exactly what will inevitably happen in China. As the middle class rises more people will become fed up with the tyrannical party leaders and China will have yet another revolution on its hands. Only this one will succeed - because now China depends upon the world for its economic sustainability, and a few Million workers sitting on their hands will cripple that economy. Time will come to skin a few fat cats, and the workers of China will have their rights.
