Fridge/Freezer issue (old model - prob 1990s)
« on: September 28, 2020, 09:26:00 pm »
[Addendum]: ## A family member said to me "oh that fridge was always overly cold in the fridge compartment!"

I came down today to find the food in the freezer section of my fridge/freezer combo (90s model I'd think) was all going very soft (not dripping or totally soft) - BUT was still reasonably cold - much of it semi-frozen-ish. The fridge compartment food (no meat, I am a vegetarian) seemed cold enough (milk, cheese, olives)

~~ The fridge compartment had a sheet of ice on the back inside wall, which fell off when I removed the shelves.

~~ I have now emptied freezer and put a bowl of boiling water in, and towels surrounding it, to defrost

# I am new to the defrosting a freezer game - am I right in thinking that the sheet of ice on the back wall of the inside of the fridge (clearly shouldn't be there) was "telling" the thermostat not to turn on the compressor, therefore I had a freezer defrosting situation?  ;D :-[

# Also, is the white disc with the screw in the centre, right-hand side of one of the images, the thermostat sensor?

I know this sounds obvious, but I am not sure.. help! thank you

Yeah, don't let ice buildup to much, defrost regularly and make sure the door seals properly.

Otherwise should be fine.

Thank you ever so much :)

So am I right in following the thought train that the ice sheet on the back wall of the fridge (upper compartment) was keeping the compressor from kicking in, due to it "thinking" it was cold enough? :)

You should not be having sheets of ice build up.  My refrigerator is a 1979 Whirlpool, and it defrosts automatically three times a day.   Maybe the defrost timer on yours isn't working (never worked?).

That disc looks like the thermostat.  If it was covered with ice, it would be insulated from the air and would not respond correctly.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.
