"FU^%ING" Credit-Cards!!!

What was your largest purchase(s) with a credit card that you were able to get a 1 or 2% rebate on?

For me, it was our daughters college tuition and housing bill over a period of four years. The school in New York City preferred credit card payments, offered no cash/check discounts so everything went onto my no annual fee business Visa card that paid a 2% flat rebate. I received the rebates in the form of a check payable to me, not the business. It was the easiest money I ever made. While I don’t miss the payments, I miss the mad money that funded my hobbies.

I put the down payment for a car on the Amex. I think I put $5,000 on it. For some reason, the dealer wouldn’t take the card for the entire car cost.

Yes, the card bill was paid off in full when due. I could’ve written a check. I wanted the points.

Her bank had contacted her the moment they suspected something wrong, after hours. Some may think it
is an intrusion of privacy, but they said they immediately noticed transactions out of the 'norm'. Her normal
'purchases' were for embroidery related things, from either local or 'specific' O.S. companies. I don't MIND
their level of 'tracking', otherwise we would put money in spaghetti tins and bury them n the back-yard!
Old card immediately blocked/cancelled, new card sent, to date 1/2 the money has been transferred back
into her account, and the rest shortly forthcoming. The banks team has tracked all the transfers, and is
working to trace all those involved without limits/boundaries, for THEIR good & for other customers.

Yes... We understand now that an actual 'Credit-Card' as opposed to a 'Debit-MasterCard' etc, means that
such 'perpetrators' are dealing with the 'Banks' money, instead of ours... however we DON'T all have such
options. As non-working pensioners, we do NOT have certain levels of 'Credit' available/open to us, and to
be honest, we don't want that any more, either!  We both 'owe' nothing in life now, and would never want
to go back to 'Owing many thousands' on various cards, ever again!  Companies want/need to see your
history though, and both of us 'owing nothing' for many years does NOT give us 'Credit' history!!   :o

For instance, simply wanting a Rental-Car for Local/OverSeas... SOME don't like our (lack-of!) history?
We can make FULL payments, and deposits etc, but they almost WANT someone who is a 'Risk', because
they have historical names/addresses to follow up on if/when there is a problem...   :o

There's no point fighting the system -  if it makes life easier for you when you rent a car or go travelling in general, just get a credit card...   your bank will usually give you one even with non-stellar history, with a low limit.   Then, as you own it for a year or two, they will keep increasing the limit as they see you can handle it.  Credit cards can have many advantages like adding extra warranty time to stuff you purchase with it,  free travel insurance, even free damage insurance for renting cars, etc. etc., which all add up to significant savings through the year.

The only rule you have to follow is:   Pay the bl**dy thing off promptly each month.  Set up auto-pay with your bank so you don't even  have to think about it.

I saw someone post that in the USA restaurants take your card in the back, but they apparently are not eating where I am.  I've been using those Zoisk terminals that are on the tables for a few years now.  Red Robin was one of the earliest I can recall to use them, Applebees, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, etc are ones I've used them at so the credit card stays in your hand.

Had a strange experience just before COVID with Kroger refusing to fall back on mag strip.  My chip card stopped working at (only) Kroger for some reason, it would work at other stores.  The Kroger cashiers would tell me to try three times and then it should fail back to reading the mag strip but it would still say 'use chip'.  They finally escalated to the manager on duty who said if your card has a chip its a national law that they can't use the strip (its not, he made that up).  But he then refused to take my card and I even spotted one of their security people following me out to the parking lot apparently thinking I was trying to fraud them.

My point it we are not as backwards as some think as there are plenty of places that don't take your card to the back and plenty of places that won't accept magstrip.

Mag strip transactions have different chargeback policies as they are higher risk from cloning and stolen cards. The merchant will quite happily sell a magstrip based POS device but if you swipe it the entire transaction risk is on the retailer. Some food outfits probably accept this risk as the other alternative is you walking without even bothering so YMMV. If 1 in 10 end up being charged back they're in the black still.

A lot of retailers do not understand this really either. Also a lot of retailers have broken ass pieces of shit for POS machines as well because they get charged by the merchant for repairs or replacement so trade a repair/replacement against taking on massive risk. Idiots.

Here in UK it's chip+pin or contactless or fuck off now. Thank goodness. So much easier.
