I saw someone post that in the USA restaurants take your card in the back, but they apparently are not eating where I am. I've been using those Zoisk terminals that are on the tables for a few years now. Red Robin was one of the earliest I can recall to use them, Applebees, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, etc are ones I've used them at so the credit card stays in your hand.
Had a strange experience just before COVID with Kroger refusing to fall back on mag strip. My chip card stopped working at (only) Kroger for some reason, it would work at other stores. The Kroger cashiers would tell me to try three times and then it should fail back to reading the mag strip but it would still say 'use chip'. They finally escalated to the manager on duty who said if your card has a chip its a national law that they can't use the strip (its not, he made that up). But he then refused to take my card and I even spotted one of their security people following me out to the parking lot apparently thinking I was trying to fraud them.
My point it we are not as backwards as some think as there are plenty of places that don't take your card to the back and plenty of places that won't accept magstrip.
