just an idea

Would it be useful to have a small MS-Paint style editor to allow inserting quick on the fly sketches in a post?
Rather than launching an editor, saving the pic, and inserting it?

Do you mean like a plugin for the forum software that lets you draw stuff in the browser?  Could be useful, especially if there was one with a component library.  :-)

I wouldn't use it myself, I turn off all bells and whistles for things when possible.

With a standard component library it would be cool - but if it was just like MS Paint, it's easier to just go to your CAD program and do it.

I don't use Google Sketchup or it's competitors... but I would guess one of has some sort of plug-in version that allows pre-defined 'sprites' (components) - if so, no need to reinvent the wheel.
It's not always the most popular person who gets the job done.
