Game cartridge?
« on: December 27, 2013, 09:00:04 pm »
Can someone please tell me the name of game/cartridge system and a name of eevblog episode.
In one of mailbag episodes Dave received a game cartridge that had two boards both with contacts
(similar to neo geo cartridges). I think it was not for a console but arcade system...

Many thanks.

Neo Geo and Capcom System (1/2/3 etc) do that.

SNK is the company that designed the Neo-Geo (MVS = Arcade, AES = Console).  The JAMMA connector was developed after arcade operators got tired of rewiring their cabinets for every new game they installed.  Some arcade boards need another connector to support additional inputs, called a Kick harness.   :-+

Are we talking about the board or the cartridge because those are separate things.  Many companies like SNK and Capcom sell a common motherboard with the game stored separately.  Typically the boards conform to the JAMMA standard which is a single card edge connector that does coin, 1p/2p, joysticks, a certain number of buttons, sound and video.

The game is usually a cartridge with a separate small part that functions as a decoder or a license so to speak.
