 leo laporte is very scared about this and has even suggested podcasters and like minded users donate money top a fund to fight .
apple settling gave this guy a legal example were he can now bully other podcasters for money.

The answer to trolls is take them to court; they often target small companies who are afraid to go to court, but big ones have full time legal departments who would know the value of those letters and assertions.  Striking back is a way to find out how seriously they take their patent claim.

Unfortunately for many companies it ends up being cheaper and easier to just settle.
The patent system is screwed up if intellectual property hogs (as they do nothing useful with the IP they keep) can do this.

The real answer is twofold, take out a patent for patent trolling and the other a patent on the idea of plugging in a plug to a power receptacle in order to get power to work an office machine or data processing device then demand billions from the patent trolls every time they send out a letter that was not written out by hand, a patent on writing by hand would also be a good idea.

Already done.  Halliburton has applied for a patent on patent trolling to stop them.

Xe has other methods to deal with them, mostly involving a guy looking like Arnold Vosloo, complete with the Seffrican accent, a few buddies, a quick trip into the desert and a spot well out of the trodden path and involving a spade..........

That's an easy one to dismiss. The letter says that they write it to you assuming you are the person to contact and if not , to send the letter on  and provide them the correct contact.

So the answer is : you tell them : please contact Hewlett Packard / Xerox or whatever equipment maker's machine you use. They installed the technology , by buying it you obtained a licence from them. As the equipment manufacturer they need to make sure they are allowed to sublicence to you. case closed.
