I wanna build one! I think I actually have the right goggles sitting around here somewhere. That would be an interesting project.

Thats an Nd:Yag laser (1064 nm is the giveaway).  No diode.

It’s possible but hard to believe for a small portable gun. I would like to know how he measured the peak power.

Wikipedia source about ‘Nd:YAG lasers’:
“In this Q-switched mode, output powers of 250 megawatts and pulse durations of 10 to 25 nanoseconds have been achieved.[4]
[4]^ Solid-state laser engineering by Walter Koechner - Springer-Verlag 1965 Page 507”
Best regards,

Probably a passive q-switch that triggers at some threshold once sufficient lasing has occured.  You know this threshold for your q-switch so you know the power output.

Ah, the pulsed laser marketing trap.

Power = Energy / Time

It is 1MW because the energy is delivered in 100ns. Power is meaningless for pulsed lasers. Energy is used instead. I feel sorry for all the accidents that will happen from using this to pop balloons.

Here is a picture of a, 375 MW (wohooo, 375 MW!) YAG laser taken this afternoon.

Yes, pulse energies are the more useful way to describe it. I've seen (and worked with) some other types of lasers that could get several gigawatts of peak power, but only for a few tens of femtoseconds. Pulse energies were a few millijoules at most. Still, those things are pretty destructive, if somewhat inefficient.

A common laboratory and industry version of Nd:YAG lasers will put out pulses of about one joule with a repetition frequency between 10 and 100 hertz. Fairly dangerous devices, as even diffuse scattering from nearby surfaces can cause eye damage. Direct beam illumination (even unfocused) tends to destroy anything not specifically designed to withstand this kind of abuse. These Nd:YAG systems do seem more likely to simply tunnel through a target without setting it on fire than faster pulsed or continuous wave lasers though. I've seen one "burn" 20 cm straight through a big roll of paper without igniting it.

The fact it is formed into a gun shape is just stupid. This encourages people to treat it like a toy. There should be laws that prevent possesion of items such as this, and the people with them should have them confiscated. Yet, in crazyland America, it is as simple as buying a cheeseburger to own a gun? The world is a mess, and responsibilities have been abandoned.

I am not joking.

An excellent excuse not to get out of bed to go to work.

Oh no! I almost forgot! We need flies now...stick them in a 'microbial fuel-cell'. Sorry Sionyn, this derails the topic by 180deg.

I did the same thing before 30 years , with an common flashlight on an Army Helicopter , actually I was using the mors-code button, and so it was not an stable beam,
even so it did attract the attention of the pilot , and the distance was less than 100 meters, and he did came over the area that i was,
so to find out what was it..
I was hidden under one huge Excavator ..  :D
There was an army air base near to my home, yes army helicopters ..  ( they did lots of exercises and they was flying like 4 or 8 or more together ) I will never forget the sound of their engines , and that in our home, anything made from glass, it was dancing , when they was flying above our homes.
It moved away before 20 years, and so its just a memory .

The world is a mess, and responsibilities have been abandoned.

Actually abdicating personal and corporate defence to the state is an abandonment of responsibility.

Also the typical "pen" style laser has been abused as much as possible so I fail to see what difference the shape of the device actually makes.

On that topic, where can you get one of these lasers from? I have another interesting project idea. It's doubtful I'll actually get around to it though. Also, does anyone know of any proper laser safety courses that I could take?

Laser safety breaks down to:
1) Wear googles that block the specific wavelength/s your laser uses.
2) Do not point at people or animals.
3) Do not look at laser with remaining eye.

I got such a laser during a visit to China. Unlike normal high-power lasers, that turned out to be a normal green laser pointer with its current source set to a ridiculous current. It only lasted for a day or two...go figure. You can build your own, I have seen HeNe, Nitrogen, CO2 lasers as well as YAG and sapphire crystals on ebay.

Speaking of eyes, here is a 'proper' eye diagram on a Hameg scope. X-Y mode, AM sine wave through capacitor. Look what engineers do at 1:42 am!  ::)

I'm not certain in which context you are asking us to "go figure". If it is in the context of "well work THAT out if ya can...", then it is pretty obvious - the laser diode was running over-current, and burned out. Simple.

Did you even read "in which context"? I know it is an expression. That was as obvious as the very reason the diode burned out!

Well those are the more obvious ones. Is there anything not obvious that is good to know?

Are there any companies that are well known for their safety gear? Also, what companies do you think would be a "better" choice for getting laser diodes or lasers like the one this fellow used in the original post video?

This is laboratory/science grade stuff.  You can rip the laser diode out of a computer and make a pretty powerful CW laser.

I see, so where would I go to get laser diodes like the ones used in CD drives, or lasers like the one the guy used to make the gun? I found a nice selection of diodes on digikey.

Nd:YAG laser heads probably are not cheap.

You are probably better off just salvaging the diode from a CD drive.  Maybe goto a flea market or pawn shop and buy an old PC.  It would be interesting to rig up some kind of pulsed supply to that cd-rom diode and see what kind of intensities you could get.

"Mosquito smoke, don't breath this!"  :D

Broadly speaking it is used to stress a point usually with a hint of irony.

Go figure back there meant: 'duh...the Chinese masterminds did it again, they managed to make a device that works for only a few minutes after it is sold'.

To be honest I'd not like to see people (and that will include undiciplined kids in the UK) running around with one of those. That looks like it has some serious fire power for a portable device. I mean what happens if you shoot it at someone ? my guess is you seriously burn them and if you shoot a vital organ they may die on the spot ? I'm not familiar with lasers but that looks well leathal - but fun. I'd love to have one but then would I trust myself with one ?

there was also a case here in the UK where a guy blinded an airlie pilot by shooting at his plane with one of those small laser pointer thigs. People just don't under stand that they are not just a funny coloured torch

our toys aren't going to get any safer. As tech advances, so does our requirements to educate society... Pretty sure we haven't gotten this right for the last 10'000 years, and probably won't anytime soon. Government control is not the way to go, as many good books have dramatized ;)

sure but when kids with pellet guns are already a pain as they are not educated to not shoot at people then I'd not want to see them with such a device. We don't need goverment control we need discipline and for people to be held accountable. I don't know what UK law is like now but when i was a kid a parent was legally responsable for what their child got up to. These days kids commit murder and the parents are never put up as being partly to blame and are allowed to continue badly rearing the rest of their "clan".

Now give a kid something like that and there will be havoc, it is a firearm at best and should be treated as such. imagine what something like that would do if shot at a persons heart or head ? people will not understand that it is more than a fancy torch.

just enough to make you wonder why there is a small hole going through your arm, and a bit of itchy and numb feeling.

will be different if its vital organs. thats why, in starwars the jedi or sith will aim to the heart with their light saber.

I thought they just cut off hands and sliced people in half.
We saw the holes that the device made...a shot in the heart that produced a hole that big would be a major issue. However I don't know if the resulting hole would be that big. That piece of plastic the guy shot looked a lot like styrofoam.

they can cut off hand or minor part, but they cannot sliced people in equally sized half, thats "uncivilized" by their book ;D they need to make a clean death (i dont know whats coming into my mind)

That piece of plastic the guy shot looked a lot like styrofoam.
i noticed the gun in the video is not so powerfull as the guy try to put the target as close as possible. a ballon? gimme a break! but i believe he made one step ahead on becoming a jedi (or probably.. a sith)

The effects on tissue will be different.  They should shoot a piece of meat and that would be accurate to human flesh.  Its a thermal issue and I imagine thermal impedance will have everything to do with it.

The term Shafri is looking for is cauterize.

It reminds me of a diode pump laser.  We have a factory near by in Santa Clara, California, U.S.A. that makes diode pump laser.  Those are corded models that requires a plug in AC 120 Volts 60 Hz here.  This one looks like a cordless model.  It can be a useful product for spot welding or small hole drilling in automobile body and fender repairs and drilling holes in circuit boards.  It can be mounted on a mount like a photographic enlarger as a photon or laser drill press.  There are lots of commercial and business opportunities here along with the liability of selling a cordless laser.  Most cutting lasers at the Anthro furniture factory in Tualatin, Oregon, U.S.A. is a carbon dioxide tube laser, a very large unit.  The air force has a giant tube laser and giant power supplies in a large passenger airliner jet platform that cuts missiles in half in flight.  Epilogue, Colorado, U.S.A. has a laser mounted on an X,Y track that cuts materials like fabric, paper, wood, and polymer plastics.  Circuit boards could be trimmed with this X,Y track mounted laser.  Most industrial material cutting lasers are carbon dioxide lasers.  This is the smallest one that I have seen, thanks for showing it.

Not much would happen, I've seen the effects of much more powerful pulses (close to a joule) from an Nd:YAG, at a beam diameter of about 1cm. Just some red burns, but as long as you don't stick around in the beam, nothing serious. (And from what I've heard from those who have done it, it's painful enough that you're not going to wait for a second pulse if you can help it)

With focus, it'll cut. But it will be a shallow cut, as they work by ablation. Basically, the thermal effect from lots of optical energy arriving in very little time makes the surface layer of the material explode, creating a cloud that scatters and defocuses the beam. So you can't go very deep with a single pulse unless it's very powerful indeed.
