Talking about expensive devices...
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:20:35 am »
I just watched some videos where Dave is showing his equipment, over a dozen of different multimeters, LCRs, several scopes(analog and digital), function generators...etc and not all are the cheapest ones.

I'm just wondering how the hell does one manage to spend so much money on electronic devices without being beaten to death by one's own wife or parents in law. Seriously, AFAIK he has two 3000 X-Series and one 2000 X-Series Agilent DSO, does he order his devices anonymously from an "adult toy" shop or does he get them as promotional?

I suggest you watch some of the workbenches of the week on the AmpHour podcast for a taster.

Dave, a tight-ass that he is, only gets in stuff that he can justify buying to himself (amortisation, utilisation etc). However, his tight-ass-nes is slightly overwhelmed by a weakness he has for DMMs.

About the wife thing, nobody should force you not to buy something with the money that you make. Right or wrong is a different issue. Instead, they should be grateful that your dream is not a collection of Italian sports cars. But engineers make shit loads of money and can afford the parents in law, the wife, the sports car and a $40k MSO. Right?

At Intel a made-to-order Tek logic analyser costs $800k...and they had two of those...in a primarily 'office' site. Cost is relative.

Dave, I want a piece from those millions to cover the MSO bit above.  :P

without being beaten to death by one's own wife

Well in Greece , the most forgiving thing by the others, are to buy an expensive tool.

The word tool = work, cancels any reactions.

As about the female enemy, she spent more in a year , just to maintain the fake color in her hair .

make sure you get revenue out of it. and you know what it is, how to use it and make full use of it etc. days ago, i was thinking about the FLUKE DMM. if i just want to measure electronics ie low voltage stuff only, why should i get the $300+ DMM that guarantee me safety from high voltage stuff which i'm not involving myself in? well... horses for courses. we can always argue. but my 2cnts only is, if you cannot justify an expensive toy, then its not for you.

I think Dave suggested that manufacturers are giving him gear for review, some he keeps, some he has to return.  Its a sweet deal and at minimum payback for all his good webwork.

Never understood that stuff about your wife/gf not "allowing" to buy stuff.
Just need to see you have enough to pay the bills etc, with what is left of my pay I do as I pleases.

And in general they prefer you spend it on geek stuff/tools then on beer in the pub :)

Never had a gf that made a fuss about this, guess it's a matter of not taking a "" in the house :)
Real Circuit design time in minutes= (2 + Nscopes) Testim + (40 +120 Kbrewski) Nfriends

Testim = estimated time in minutes Nscopes= number of oscilloscopes present Kbrewski = linear approx of the nonlinear beer effect Nfriends = number of circuit design friends present

Listen to Amp Hour #33 - Dave said Agilent offered money for the review but he turned it down but got to keep a scope - I don't recall if this was his request or their offer. There was some suggestion (possibly elsewhere) that the 2000 might turn into a 3000 at some point in  the future but they needed the review one back as they were in high demand for customer demos.

I never go this thing about the wife or girlfriend either. I think it's part amusement and part an admission that the women are really the boss in the house. Like any wise husband will tell you "I wear the trousers in the house yes, but only because my wife lets me"

I find it funny but it's not something I've observed with my parents, My dad is firmly in control, if my mum spoke to him the way Hyacinth speaks to Richard he'd tell her to shut up. My sister's husband also seems to be firmly in control of her which isn't a good thing.

I also can't see myself being like that with women, though I've never had a long term relationship, I don't feel the need.

i will follow what (trivial thing) the wifey said at some aspects, so i can freely do another aspects at my will without higher risk of noise or interference.

Which is of course as stupid as thinking you "rule" because you have/are a dick.
