Greatest Inventions/Inventors in Physics
« on: June 27, 2018, 03:36:02 am »
Hi Forum

I have been tasked with giving a talk in a couple months on the greatest inventions in Physics, and am just taking a straw poll to get ideas from the industry.  Ideas can be in any field but need a physics angle.  Examples may be the telephone, light bulb, wireless communication systems, GPS satellite systems, the transistor, the laser, coffee espresso machines, ... whatever.  I will also take ideas/nominations on the greatest inventors in Physics over the past 100 years or so.  Bonus points if you can also identify the first patent to your invention.  Of course, credit will be given if I use your idea.

Thanks for your help.
Phil

This an easy answer, since you are limiting to around 100 years. Tesla started the modern electrical movement that we must thank him for and that is alternating current for household power. Without that invention, we would not be talking on a forum or have advanced technologically as far as we have. Thankfully, Edison did not win that battle.

Electricity for the masses bar none !

So much has evolved from harnessing it as to affect everyday lives.
Sure bit more than 100 years has passed since its introduction but not everybody has had the luxury it provides for 100 years.
My dad was just 4 and the youngest of 3 when it came here in 1935. My grandma had already been married for 13 years and bit by bit they acquired all the labor saving devices that only electricity distribution can provide.

That's outside the 100 year mark.
