I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find a thread discussing it:

I often use the "Show new replies to your posts" link to check for updates in threads I have been recently involved in. But sometimes a thread drags on and on, maybe moves in a direction I am less interested in, and I would prefer not to track it any longer. Is there a way to "unsubscribe" from such a thread, so that it no longer shows up in the "Show new replies to your posts" list?

I'm afraid you can't.
I would like such a possibility too...

And while we're here, I want the opposite ... a way to follow a thread without having to post something inane just in order to have posted to it...

(which I hope I haven't done, but it's been tempting)

Hmm, I just found an "Ignore topics options" page in the user profile section. It seems that you can select up to 100 threads to be "ignored". According to the short description on that page, this means they won't show up in the "unread posts" and "new replies" lists, but do still appear in the board views -- exactly what I want.

But where is the link or button to actually "ignore" a thread in that way? Can't spot it anywhere in the thread or "unread" lists... Thanks for helpful hints!

Ah, thanks! That indeed seems to relate to the "ignore topics" feature I found in the profile settings.

There is a new forum feature that lets you ignore topics (threads).
You'll find the button in the top right on the Unread Posts page.
Enabling this for any thread means that any posts in there will not show up in your unread post list any more.

But heck -- where is that button in the top right of the Unread Posts page?!  :-//
Probably I'm just blind to the obvious; or does it have to be enabled in the user profile somehow?

Bingo, thank you!
Activating that option is not obvious, but it works as advertised.

So, for the record:
The syntax to enable this is:

Profile>Modify Profile>Look and Layout>Show quick-moderation as: Checkboxes
Then UPDATE PROFILE
You will then have a Ignore Topic checkbox in your "Show new replies tor your posts" page.
