Switching from no-clean to water soluble paste
« on: May 28, 2017, 06:58:17 am »
Just wondering if anyone has experience/tips switching to water soluble solder paste for making and selling products from home.

I've been using no-clean for years but would like to move to water soluble to save having to buy isopropyl alcohol.
(also the availability of no-clean + leaded paste from digikey is just chipquik brand. Which i find sucks badly)

As i understand it, you *must* clean water soluble flux off the PCB, but this can easily be done with a scrub under warm water using a brush?

Thanks.

Warm water + a brush wont clean under larger SMD parts effectively.  Now you have water washable residue that's more aggressive because its wet.   Unless you go to the extremes of using a two stage hot water ultrasonic cleaning tank system (first stage cleaner, sluice it off then second stage deionised final rinse)  or a pro-grade hot water-jet system with deionised water for the final rinse, I suspect you wont be happy with the long term reliability of the resulting boards.
