Trick AND treat: "You're going to give me candy after you stomp out that flaming bag of dogshit".

The old classics are the best.

I forgot today was Halloween, and had to disappoint two kids. :'(
In my defense, it's not an actual holiday here, or traditional in any way; it's just TV and stores pushing it. If you ask me, there's no logic in it.

That is not an AND situation, since the events are not concurrent. Its a causal thing - trick THEN treat THEN .NOT. trick. The more insidious situation is that one kid who comes home crying "they all gave me candy. I wanted an excuse to burn someone's house down". There is also treat THEN trick when the treats run out. Again, a causal relationship, not concurrency.

Yes, same in many parts of the world in which Halloween was just "imported" from the USA.
If marketers are brilliant enough, maybe in a decade we'll all be celebrating Thanksgiving too. ;D
Otherwise this comes from a pretty old celtic tradition and got imported in the US somehow by accident (by Irish immigrants). It wasn't even called Halloween.

The original term in English is “Eve of all Hallows” and variations, since it is the night before All Saints’ Day in the church calendar since the 7th century.
‘een’ is an abbreviation for ‘evening’ and ‘hallow’ is a cognate of the German ‘Heilige’ for holy person or saint.

They are already making good progress with the sequel that is probably more important to them, Black Friday...

The time is long past when we should just 'fess up and admit that these holidays are now strictly about gross materialism and have nothing whatever to do with their religious or social origins:
- Halloween: Get candy and goodies from strangers (and for some, break and mess up a bunch of shit)
- Thanksgiving: Stuff your face (and prepare for Black Friday, where you can buy a bunch of shit cheap)
- Christmas: Get a bunch of shit under the tree
- 4th of July: Set off fireworks and blow shit up

FWIW, I'm a Kiwi, and the same's true here! 😋

Amazon just sent me another "Get ready for Halloween" message. Is their calendar wrong, or have they already started pushing Halloween for next year? Maybe even 2026?

Are your ready?

(I'm assuming this is Halloween logic, you see.)
