Hameg HMO3524 or Tektronics MSO3034
« on: October 07, 2010, 09:10:42 am »
Hi

i'm buying a new scope.
which of these two should i take?
Hameg HMO3524 or Tektronics MSO3034
the hameg is about half the cost, but will it be good to me in the long run.
i have a tek 200MHz 4 channel for a long time now, but it is going bad.
if i'm on a small time base, the noise floor is hugh.

thanks

Consider the Yokogawa DLM2034. It's a mixed signal 350MHz 4 Channel Oscilloscope with logic inputs. You should find it's price between the two, and it ought to outperform both. If Deadtime, Screen update rate or memory depth is important to you, then you really should check them out.

Brief glance I say go for the Hameg.
At half the price for similar banner specs, hard to argue.

2500 waveforms/sec vs 50,000/sec on the Tek though. Big difference, but not quite worth double IMO.

Dave.

One of the things is the digital phosphorus, would the persistance feature on the hameg do the same?
the yokogawa also looks nice. indeed the price point in between.

If it does it won't be as high performance as the Tek at 50,000/sec. Is it worth double?, your call.
The Hameg has superior sample rate though.
Tek has a bigger screen.
I like the sound of the "reference class" noise performance on the Hameg.

So Dave, What's 500,000/sec worth?

Again look at the Yokogawa vaneenbergen. I sell these Yokogawa units in Australia, but it's a fair bet your from Europe so trust me I have nothing to gain from giving you the advise.

Dave, if you want to see the performance of these DLM2000's vs anything in it's class it can be arranged. But as I mentioned in a previous post I just can't have it taken apart....as I'm not Yokogawa, and it's my Demo unit.

i looked at the yokogawa unit and indeed it lookst great.
i called the sales guy's here and the price is indeed between the two. making my choice even harder.
i'll probably have a demo unit here next week or after.

btw it states that it can only decode 2 serial channels athe the same time, correct?

Well, to be honest I thought it was 8 Serial inputs. I've been wrong before...lol, so get that advice from your Rep...better still get the Yokogawa on your bench and see if the Hameg or Tek rep is happy for you to compare...in your time, on your signals !!

Just remember to tell each rep that your considering the Mixed Signal functions,  as I believe all three models logic probes don't seem standard. I know they are not for the Yokogawa, but having said that Yokogawa do offer a discount if you don't want the Mixed Signal functionality and you just want fast display updates.

I'd love to hear your findings...good or bad.

Cheers Bud....and good shopping :)

really nice unit. the ui and the history is just great.
i have the unit till next week. now i'm just doubting on what version to get 200/350/500 MHz as the price diff is pretty big.

Hi Joost,
Yes the history function really is a winner. And if you compare the quality of the actual display you should notice a big difference. I laugh that people talk about banner specs (including the front end) which people consider is the A/D converter. Well I believe the front end is the display because if your looking at anything other than "single shot" the display becomes the front end IMO.

Regarding price, I think you will find the Yokogawa units less than the equivelent Tek unit. Not sure on the Hameg.

Try and get a Tektronix unit so you can compare side by side. Any decent rep will agree that the proof is in the pudding (which... in case your not sure of the English meaning is, "the users opinion is the right one....at least for them"

Again mate...love too hear which way you go.

PS Given the way you write (a good grasp on English), you might understand the saying but given your user name I guess your Dutch...so no offence intended :)

Yes, I'm dutch.

i'll try and get a tek as well here.
i'm probably skipping the hameg, but the yokogawa is fitting my way of working.

btw mambo i got a differential logic proble with it. what is the diff with the normal one?

Talking about screen and usability, have you considered the LeCroy MSO 44Xs-A?

Chris

Don't trust me I work in marketing!

After a few years with LeCroy and R&S I work for HIOKI USA. If there is anything I can help with, please contact me.

Hi joost,
It would be a differential probe (allowing floating measurements, depending on the model number upto 1400V) or a logic probe. What's the part number ?

The normal probes are designed for lower electronic voltages, like most standard probes. The standard probe is a 10:1 probe.

I am also curious about the performance of the Hameg, since the are a Rohde & Schwarz company these days. The older DSO's of Hameg where not worth the effort of looking at, although as an analog oscilloscope the are pretty good I can tell you Joost that the Tektronix TDS3000 series is a nice scoop to have as a 'kijkglas" ('looking glass' in english). But the deep memory of the Yokogawa oscilloscope is something the Tek doesn't have, and it's very very nice to have lot's of memory. I'm also looking out for a DLM2000 oscilloscope, could you tell me something about prices? Only wish that Yokogawa supplied Tek P6139A probes with their oscilloscopes, the Yokogawa probes are HUGE!

the price for my config will be around 8000,- eur for the 200MHz or 11500,- euro for the 500MHz
the config is with max memory, logic probe, uart and spi decoding and.... a bag :)

my main doubt is about the bandwidth, the price diff is very very big.

i have the unit two more dayfor testing.

btw blackfin are you dutch?

Ja... ik ben Nederlander  ;D

I think it is quite a lot of extra money for the bandwidth, do you need it? If I think about SPI and UART decoding 500MHz is a bit overkill. The analog bandwidth is not limiting the toggle frequency of the logic probe is it? A good protective bag is definitely a must have for a portable oscilloscope imo. Is that €8k the price for the 4 channel model with the M2 memory option?(62.5Mpts)
