What is this fastener, and where can I get them?
« on: January 03, 2017, 02:35:12 am »
Hi everyone!

Doing some prototyping for a electronics case.
I need to mount it on a 1/4-20 tripod so I need one of those what I would call a "nut insert" or "push fitting nut".

You see them a lot in photography products like this mobile photo tripod holder.

I have found some in the UK, http://www.memfast.co.uk/shop/vclose1.asp?prd=117152&cat=6138003649
And the same ones from China. But unlike the one in the photo I posted, these are really tall, nearing 15mm.
I need one like the one in the photo, which is about 5mm tall.
Just don't have the height or space for these larger ones inside the box.

Any ideas on what these are called, and where I can get them?
Need to be able to get them shipped to the UK and in quantities less than 100 without selling a kidney too.

Any ideas?
Thank you!
Jack,

Are you sure you want one only 5mm long? 1/4"-20 UNC, which seems to be the standard for tripod mounts, is 6.35mm inner diameter, and the inserts are usually 8 or 9mm outer diameter. Making one only 5mm long would be very prone to getting ripped out with the lever action of a tripod or similar attachment on something like a camera. It's no surprise the standard length for them is 15mm, and even the anchor ones seem to be either 9.5mm or 15mm long.

But saying that I have found one Chinese manufacturer that seems to offer them in a 6mm long version, if you insist: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=38645989159&ns=1&abbucket=2#detail (doesn't say whether they're UNC, though...)

They are fine for smaller applications like the phone holder and what I am making. Thanks for the link!
