Here on the EEVblog forum, mocking audiophoolery is a favorite passtime, and Sennheiser makes it easy:
* Tubes... CHECK!
* Ridiculous enclosure... CHECK!
* Specs way beyond meaningfulness (8Hz to 100KHz)... CHECK!
* Exorbitant pricetag ($55K)... CHECK!

P.S. Most bats use frequencies below ~80KHz: http://www.staffordshirebats.btck.co.uk/Information/Frequencies (http://www.staffordshirebats.btck.co.uk/Information/Frequencies)

Dont you know? Audiphools have golden ears.
-
Arse Technica? They got that right!
I'm willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt as a pure publicity stunt - Sennheiser are a well regarded company in the professional audio market, not some audiophool woo merchant. (Well they used to be at least...)
-
Close to the end of the article, there is a sign of "impurity": :)
"The amp inside the cans is all solid-state, making use of MOSFET transistors."
-
So the headphones themselves have "an alleged total harmonic distortion of just 0.01 percent", then they're driving them with a valve amp... :palm:
-
There is something to be said for having a bandwidth wider than that needed. It allows the needed bandwidth to have a possibly flatter phase error. But to use tubes is just audiophool wank.
-
Every headphone goes from 8Hz to 100kHz. It doesn't say nothing about the amplitude. ;)
This spec is completely wothless. :-DD
-
You missed the...
Oh, and when you turn the Orpheus on, the controls and vacuum tubes rise out from the marble base, and a protective glass cover opens up to reveal the headphones.
That's got to be worth $10k on it's own! 8)

Very linear valve amplifiers exist: http://www.burwenaudio.com/Krohn-Hite_UF-101.pdf (http://www.burwenaudio.com/Krohn-Hite_UF-101.pdf)

But why? :wtf:
-
Because there are people with too much money.
-
Tubes look fake, with a red LED just under the base.
-
I guess they are for Batman?
-
And don't miss the reference in the article to the audiophile Ethernet cables made by these people:
http://www.audioquest.com/ethernet/vodka (http://www.audioquest.com/ethernet/vodka)
From the above web site:
...
DIRECTIONALITY: All audio cables are directional. The correct direction is determined by listening to every batch of metal conductors used in every AudioQuest audio cable. Arrows are clearly marked on the connectors to ensure superior sound quality. For best results have the arrow pointing in the direction of the flow of music. For example, NAS to Router, Router to Network Player.

The connectors on the end of those Ethernet cables look really nice to be honest! I wonder if you can get normal cables with such ends! A lot of my cables have the little retention thing snapped off!

I was thinking more like something from a 1970's Bond film...

RS have them in stock, less than 10 Euro each if you by them 25 at a time!

You're right. You maybe saw it in this teardown? I did. For the ones that are curious about what it looks like on the inside, the teardown is here: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/07/gallery-we-tear-apart-a-340-audiophile-ethernet-cable-and-look-inside/ (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/07/gallery-we-tear-apart-a-340-audiophile-ethernet-cable-and-look-inside/)

I certainly wouldn't say no to those.
-
Nice. Dave should buy one and do a teardown of the amplifier :)
