Heatsink to PCB mounting thingies (pins?)
« on: June 18, 2020, 08:14:20 pm »
For mounting vertical heatsinks like the below (I suppose it has threaded holes for the PCB mounting) what's the name of the thingies that you would mount it to the board with?
Should I just use M3 crews?
Or is there something special-purpose with an M3 thread on one end and that can be inserted into PCB holes and soldered like a component pin?

You can use self tapping screws into the heatsink.

There are solderable threads ( such as these https://sk.farnell.com/wurth-elektronik/9774015151r/spacer-smt-round-steel-m2-5-1/dp/2497591 ).

Or create a thread inside of the heatsink.

I've seen clip on pins for folded metal heat sinks. The smaller extruded types will often have holes for press fit pins. In both cases the pins get soldered to the board. You may have to go to the manufacturer for the correct part.

Does "3*3" mean three 3-mm holes, or three M3-tapped holes?

M3 or self-tapping? It doesn't matter. On a heatsink that size, you need screws, forget soldering. I'd have expected M4 or even M5, actually.

Solderable nuts is the term but the heatsink is rather large to be held by solderably nuts. You'll need to mount the heatsink to a chassis or casing.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
