Help me identify an old typing tutor "game."
« on: April 16, 2015, 03:28:14 pm »
When I was younger, I remember making my mom play a typing game where you were a knight and you eventually fought a dragon if you were good enough. I don't think it had "cut scenes", but you just progressed as you typed more and more. I remember it having decent graphics, not very "cartoony" like many of the typing games are now-a-day. We played it on an old windows 95 machine IIRC.

I know this is completely random, but it's driving me nuts and I REALLY want to find it. I don't need practice, it's been nagging me and I really want to play through it again.

Sorry for the completely random post. Google was no help to me.

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
We had that in school.  The only thing I remember is making custom games that were 1 word long of about 4 characters, and then getting all four keys lined up, hitting them at the same time, and getting average WPM scores in the thousands.

Many of the typing tutor games where it was teaching you where the letters were had parts of the game were it was something like "asasasasasasasassdsdsdsdsdsdssdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdgfgfgfgfgfgfg" so you'd just go through and mash those two keys till your character stopped, then mash the next two. I remember a mario like game that was like this.

With that said, I played "typing of the living dead" (just now) online and got 30000 (accuracy of 92%) before my hands gave out from being tired. hahah

There was a lot of "edutainment" crap in the 90s... The only two I remember were the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing series, of which there were quite a few entries, and the classic Typing of the Dead. It was probably one of the former.

Why just blame the 90s? I remember playing a spelling / typing game on the ZX Spectrum in the early / mid 80s

I passed typing by opening up the results file with an editor and manually manipulating the data.

I remember some space themed typing game/course I was required to take. I had 140 wpm in the 7th grade. Probably the only good thing that came out of playing pc games all day  :(.

Typing speed is kind of funny.  Everyone thinks I type really fast, but my accuracy and spelling sucks pretty hard.  I just kind of throw up on the keyboard and let spell check sort it out later.  I can't imagine all the secretaries that typed 100+ wpm on a typewriter with perfect accuracy and spelling.

Yeah you need quite a bit of discipline for that. I type fast, but I don't have proper typing technique. My fingers don't stay anywhere near the home rows. My typing speed drops real hard when aiming for 100% accuracy and long sentences, I'm used to real short bursts. It's a habit now, would be like learning a new language to try and fix it.
