Hey old timers, what are your favorite threads?
« on: February 13, 2017, 07:53:12 am »
I'm currently an Electrical Engineering student and the primary reason that I started watching EEV blog was for added context in my studies. I've been exploring the channel for awhile now, but I feel like I need more. I'm hoping that you guys would be willing to suggest some cool threads to help keep my interest in the subject, and the dream, alive.  :D

Some things I am particularly interested in:
Semiconductors! - materials, processes, device engineering, ect.
Circuits - I'm always looking for this stuff, but I'm only at the point of designing basic analog circuits with discrete components. So a decent amount of what Dave covers goes right over my head. I would like to change that.

But ultimately I'm up for anything. This is as much about finding interesting new things as it is about reinforcing my knowledge.

Thanks!

Electronic materials are my thing. The more esoteric, the better.

I'd suggest having a browse through Dave's list of videos, which you can find here: https://www.eevblog.com/episodes/  (scroll down from the top just a little.)

Click on anything that takes your fancy ... and see where it takes you.

If you get into RF or signal integrity , whilst not a Dave video - this is one of my favourites - I think I have watched it 4-5 times
It's about transmission line impedance mismatch / transformation - done in a beautifully simply way as only someone who really understands the subject can.
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

I remember that one, it's hard to forget such great lab classes!

As a more recent source of videos, these ones are worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/user/w2aew/

+1

Even with props built to show how things work.
See the episode on differential amplifiers (#193).

For me Alan hits the sweet spot: language, speed, length of videos and the right topics.

PS:
Oh btw: Alan, I hope you'll be up und running again soon! Literally!

Another +1 vote for W2AEW from me.
Fascinating stuff on analog Tektronix scopes and some very interesting Circuit Tutorials - I find these so much fun I usually get a breadboard out and start "playing along at home"   (to use one of Dave's expressions)

A decent pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

Allergic to suits, which seems to preclude me from most jobs I would hate.

Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

Also curious what old timer means.

That depends on your current age.  But I expect it means 40 and above or maybe >=250 posts [emoji22]

Welcome to the forum.

There's cool threads start everyday, the boards you need to keep an eye on are Beginners and https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/

But it's not just about threads, there's a good # of very smart EE's here, spend some time getting to know who they are and follow their replies. Just reading the forum for a bit will help you phrase questions and start threads in an intelligent way in order to get the answers you seek. Above all don't be shy and give as much info as possible to ensure quality replies.
Good luck and enjoy.  :)

I loved that film! It wasn't a video for a number of decades after its production, lol.

What a gem.

I'll only consider myself an "old timer" when I get to 555...
