I came across that while finding this:

That issue of Telecommunications Journal of Australia was dedicated to construction of the Sydney to Melbourne coaxial cable link, officially opened on 9 April 1962.

Has anyone some copies of that journal around that period, that they don't want? I'd like to get a good-condition paper copy of that particular issue especially.

I remember reading a lot of copies of "The  Journal", whilst on shift a various Radio & TV sites.
There was a follow up of that Sydney to Melbourne coax link, when a few years on, the coax between Perth & Geraldton went in.

They used several Cat D9 dozers with ripper attachments on the rear to make the trench to lay the cable.
After a while, they ran into major problems, as the rock was so hard the ripper blades were wearing out rapidly.

The PMG sent out a "distress call" to Caterpillar in the USA, who promptly sent an Engineer out to join the crew & try to find out what the problem was.

After some time, he took his findings back to the 'States, & Cat made up specially hardened ripper blades for this particular job.

The Department got their problem sorted, Cat got a new addition to their product line, & the Engineer got an interesting trip, valuable experience, & substantial "kudos" with both his employer & customer.

I could hardly imagine anything like that happening today---- the "bean counters"would go into meltdown
at both organisations!

Nah, that sort of thing does still happen. Much rarer than it used to be, and often unofficially, but it happens.
