Terminal post strap thingamy whatsamajig... what is it called ?
« on: December 03, 2017, 02:09:03 pm »
Hi good folks.
My (new to me) WK.instruments bench psu has 2 channels both with sense inputs. These are normally 'strapped' to the appropriate output using small metal jumper strips.
They are standard post spacing.
I enclose a couple of piccies of the offending articles.
Unfortunately, the 2nd channel has the straps missing. I would like to get hold of a couple if possible but have no luck searching on various terms. Anybody have any ideas where they may be available from ?. Yes, I could make 2, but I really would rather purchase them if possible.
Or, has any body got a couple I can buy ?

On a side note, Wayne Kerr (WK) is a superb company making world  class instruments....  but I can't help feeling the chappy got a real ribbing at school with a name like that..... ??? .. what were his parents thinking of  :)..

many thanks,
J.

I can't find it anymore on the Wayne Kerr website, but I believe the founders of the company named it after two film stars.
I have an interesting collection of Wayne Kerr admittance bridges that are based on ratio transformers, and are still in calibration after lo, these many years, since the ratios of integers (number of turns) are invariant against time and the small number of internal standard components are hermetically sealed.

Hi Tim,
That is interesting, I cannot find a reference to the original founder or choice of names, that does sound plausible though.

Perhaps John Wayne and Deborah Kerr ?. Although Deborah Kerr was in her very early career.

I would imagine your admittance bridges are a work of art !. They are aimed at capacitive reactance I believe ?.  Do they have the rather nice vernier air-spaced rotary capacitor ? (or am I confusing them with something else entirely  :palm:   :)

I am actively seeking  80's / 90's era WK gear if I can find it. They made some super PSU's, bench multimeters and LCR units. They are a pleasure to work on. The modern  / current stock models are crazy money a thing of beauty.

As for later stuff, If only I find (and afford!) a nice little DMM357 and GPS4303, but alas, too late models and far far too expensive for me. They could have pride of place. - however, I digress.  :)

Binding post shorting link?

Here is one variant, not the one you pictured, but I'm sure if you search you can find what you want:

Then I'm about to make you very jealous!  >:D

I managed to pick up two WK 6425 Component Analysers a while back (one calibrated and working, one has its horizontal CRT deflection broken). Wouldn't call the display on these things great, produces a "wobbly" image which seems to relate to the CRT oscillators needing to warm up before they're stable. But very responsive units and rather straight-forward to use, very accurate and precise. Dodgy construction on the case though, not a big fan of that part.

And yes, I'm planning to fix the broken one soon and do a tear down of it at the same time. And once I have fixed the broken one I plan to sell the calibrated one  ;)

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 8) VERY NICE ! :-+
I am suitably impressed and jealous. ;D
I am surprised at the wobbly image  ???, sound like a re-cap of the deflection control circuitry may be called for. The lack of horizontal output should be a fairly easy fix though.
A great find, that is the sort of item I am on the lookout for. I have some very good contacts that will hopefully find something at the right price (and the 'right price' for the right unit is VERY cheap  ^-^). Ideally a non functioning unit with good exterior, housing and 'furniture' would be ideal.
I bet you were a very happy camper when you found those. Nice one. ! Agilent and Fluke etc are Sooooooooooo Soooooooooooo boring...  and as common as muck ;)

Yeah, might be. Must admit I haven't had the courage to open it up yet :)

The broken one is in the office so popped the hood today and had a peek, think I found the guilty party already:

Wayne Kerr REALLY likes their massive Philips caps it would seem, this is honestly just pure capacitor pornography:

And top view of the unit:

Also have the service manual with schematics so not too worried about this thing in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, and sometimes the WK gear is massively over designed internally and still looks like crap on the outside, it's really funny in a way.

Did a bit of further investigation, Wayne Kerr really overdid it on this one, the "crappiest" cap I found in this thing was a little Nichicon (the one that leaked). Everything else is high-end from reputable manufacturers at first glance.

Hi HalFET, yes, all the best products - there is usually a full item list in the manual also.
Thanks for posting the WK porn piccies  ;D
I had to type with one hand !! :scared:

 ;)
