How big is "half a bee's dick"?........
« on: February 25, 2016, 11:23:50 pm »
Someone used the expression in another post and it got me thinking how big IS a bee's dick, and what is half of that number?  Are we talking length or diameter?

Wikipedia to the rescue!!
(There may or may not be a picture of a "Bee's DicK" in that link, but I would say this is only not safe for work if you would get in trouble for visiting the wikipedia page for "Drone(bee)" or watching animal planet)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drone_%28bee%29#Mating_and_the_drone_reproductive_organ

I on the other hand highly discourage people using google images for the search "Bee's Dick".

Can't say I've heard that term before.

I would guess it's about an RCH.

Was it really supposed to do that?

Quotes from the Wikipedia on Bee Sex:

"The drone makes first contact from above the queen, his thorax above her abdomen, straddling her. He then grasps her with all six legs, and everts the endophallus into her opened sting chamber."

Hot. It's like a bee romance novel...

"If the queen’s sting chamber is not fully opened, mating is unsuccessful, so some males that mount the queen do not transfer semen. Once the endophallus has been everted, the drone is paralyzed, flipping backwards as he ejaculates."

Maybe the bee just needs to be a bit more romantic, light some candles, throw down some pollinated rose petals, put on some Berry White; you know, set the mood. Then, maybe offer the queen a back rub? Add in a little foreplay and your queen's sting chamber will open like the gates to paradise.

"The process of ejaculation is explosive—semen is blasted through the queen’s sting chamber and into the oviduct."

Ohhh yeah! Giggity!

"The process is sometimes audible to the human ear, akin to a "popping" sound. The ejaculation is so powerful that it ruptures the endophallus, disconnecting the drone from the queen."

Holy shit! The bee's dick *literally* explodes!

"The bulb of the endophallus is broken off inside of the queen during mating—so drones mate only once, and die shortly after. The leftover penis remaining in the queen’s vagina is referred to as the “mating sign”. The plug will not prevent the next drone from mating with the same queen, but may prevent semen from flowing out of the queen."

Huh. So a dead bee's dick turns into a sort of diaphragm. That's real nice. Her mate just died and now she can go bee all slutty.

Well. That was educational.

So I found a paper with some good microscope images (DOI: 10.1007/s13592-011-0094-9).

Based on the included 1000um scale bar, I was able to analyze the image and determine that the length of the bee's dick is approximately 4800um. Therefore, half a bee's dick is approximately 2.4mm.

This is quite a bit larger than I expected...

Weird. I get the *same* thing from the ladies!

"Wow timb... A whole 5mm! That's soooo much larger than I thought it would bee!"

It's extraordinary the things one can learn at EEVblog: electronics, new units of length, how to date a queen (bee) or die trying, etc., etc.  ^-^

I picked up on it after watching Dave's videos. I guess this is mostly an Aussie thing? I've never heard anyone in the US use this term, but it was pretty obvious what he meant. It's a bit more polite than the usual US equivalent which I picked up at a relatively tender age working with my neighbor in construction and repairing his fleet of trucks. I don't believe I actually need to post it...

A bee's dick length? I guess it depends if you ask the bee, or his wife.

A mate once conducted an experiment relating to the CH series of measurements (red, blond, black etc.) and concluded that the RCH is indeed the highest resolution unit.  Still not sufficiently fine for integrated circuit work, but more than adequate for through hole PCBs and associated mechanical fabrication.

This is quite a bit larger than I expected...

So it's like Farads.  They just got the scale wrong for actual usage.

To keep this going, here is a reference table:
1 Bee's Dick = 4.8mm
1/2 Bee's Dick = 2.4mm
1/4 Bee's Dick = 1.2mm
1/8 Bee's Dick = 0.6mm
1/16 Bee's Dick = 0.3mm
1/32 Bee's Dick = 0.15mm
1/64 Bee's Dick = 0.075mm

Or for you powers of 10 type people:
1 Bee's Dick = 4.8mm
milli-Bee's Dick = 0.048mm
micro-Bee's Dick = 0.000048mm
nano-Bee's Dick = 0.000000048mm
Half a nano-Bee's Dick = 0.000000024mm     <------ Now we're talking a small number!

I'd heard our esteemed leader use the term a couple of times in his vids and it was a new term of measurement to me.  :-//
A Gnats cock however is a recognised measurement from my formative years and I highly suspect they are one in the same.
By simple maths: 2 Gnat's cocks = 1 Bee's dick and one should link these to Mr.B's also correct unit of measurement of 5/8 of FA.....

2 Gnat's cocks = 1 Bee's dick = 5/8 of FA

I strongly suspect that a new forum emoticon would be completely out of the question although it might be useful and more polite than just calling somebody a dick.

(...) so drones mate only once (...)

Replace "drones" with "husband", and that will still bee accurate for most men after 10 years of marriage.

Exercise: calculate half-a-bee's dick in parsecs!

:-DD, +1 for this!.  Back in the old neighborhood, an ass hair was a unit of measurement, as in, that freaking car missed me by an ass hair!

Hi,

There is a lot of 'evidence' in the electronics that a bee's dick was used as unit of measure.
Look at these early op-amps:

The pins where place on a 0.2" pitch. 0.2" is the Imperial Bee's Dick, often confused with the European Bee's dick which is a tad shorter at 5mm.

When the DIP packaged IC arrived, the pin pitch was chosen as 'half a bee's dick'

We now have SOIC (quarter dick spacing)

Regards,

Jay_Diddy_Bee

I like to play a game where when I watch Dave's videos, I wait for the chance to respond with "That's what she said." to his various musings.

Half a bee's dick...that's what she said.

I could play with this all day....that's what she said.

You get the point. ;)
