How can see your device IP on windows 10?
« on: March 21, 2018, 09:58:15 pm »
I need to selectively block the internet without locking myself out:

I have Verizon fios router and this is what I see.
I know my laptop comes up as desk top. Did windows do away with the DOS prompt ipconfig tool?

Nope, still there - Open the command window and type ipconfig (type Windows+R then CMD into the textbox).

DOS-Box ipconfig shows your inhouse net till your router (ip-standardgateway, mostly 192.168.x.x; yours could be 192.168.1.1). Look inside your router (webinterface), which external ip it has, in the moment.

If you didn't rented a fixed to your connection associated ip, this usually changes every 24h.

An easier way is to just google, what is my IP, and that will tell you your current WAN IP.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

An even easier way is to look at any post you made on the EEVBlog forum, and it will tell you!

Every website you visit can see your IP. If it didn't, it couldn't send anything to you. It's like trying to get Amazon to deliver a package to you without them knowing your address.

I assume you're trying to keep others out of your wireless modem, and the password isn't good enough?

Your router is most likely set up to hand local IP addresses dynamically via DHCP. That means no device that connects is guaranteed to get the same local address, so filtering on the IP address isn't going to be very useful.

A more common solution is to filter devices by MAC address, listing only those that are permitted (or alternately, rejecting specific addresses, but that's a less useful setting). Your router should have a page for doing that somewhere in the wireless area.

ipconfig /all   will show the physical address (same as mac address) for a PC
For android, go to Settings->About Device->Status to see the mac address

As for accidentally locking yourself out...the above only applies to the wireless setting. You can always plug a PC into the router with a physical network cable to get back in. Highly recommended anyway when messing with router settings. In fact, disabling wireless administration entirely is a very good security step, in my opinion. Then people need physical access to even start to mess with it.

No I need one level deeper to see the computers behind the router the 192.168.x.x or see where the device displays the "desktop 4787348" name.

To make it easier and quicker next time why not change the computer name to Beamins Laptop or something that positively identifies it as yours?

Too easy to make yourself identifiable when using public networks.

Umm, that ship has sailed mate, you posted the hostnames on your network on a public forum that's indexed by google, anyone who sees those hostnames on their wifi can google it and find out it's yours.

Change it to something that's easy to remember but doesn't personally identify you if you're that paranoid about being identifiable or just get over it and stop worrying about it unless you're doing something you shouldn't be on those public networks.
