How Dave probably Saved My Life
« on: February 05, 2011, 12:14:22 am »

I thought I would post this as my first post here.

as a hobbyist I never gave much thought to the DMM I was using untill I stumbled onto the EEVblog via youtube, I was basically just watching people blow things up with electricity when I came across the EEVblog so I popped over to the site and saw a whole wealth of brilliant videos one being the DMM one where he compares various DMMs from the cheapies off ebay to some more respected ones, so when he mentioned about the lack of protection in the cheaper ones I took my "cat III" rated cheapie apart and saw not a single bit of protection outside of a shit glass fuse on the mA range so I immediatly went out and got a better one with the MOVs and HRC fuses etc.
something I do a lot of uses high voltage, up until now I have had no major accidents so now thanks to dave and his brilliant blog (seriously there has not been one that I haven't found interesting or entertaining) I have a new DMM that won't melt my face off should one of my contraptions go wrong.

and on a related note.. my favorite quote is "if you don't follow my advice then I hope Darwin sorts you out"

Thumbs up for recognising the potential danger and relevance to the work you do, and doing something about it!

Dave.

cheers dude, it is all about safety. I am slightly embarrassed that I never even thought that the DMM could be that dangerous. so keep up the good work !

Yes some people don't listen.

Of course I don't think you should throw your crap DVM away, just only use it on circuits powered by small batteries where the short circuit current won't burn you.

oh of course I'll keep it for low voltage bitch work. but I ended up getting myself a Fluke, I couldn't afford it but I sold a few bits on ebay and got one because it really isn't worth being without a safe reliable meter and I will be saving up for one of the 87 series Flukes so that I can retire the carboot sale HP meter I have from the 70's
