How do I make best use of this forum?
« on: July 30, 2016, 04:15:18 pm »
Hi all,

I sometimes don't know where to post questions. Also if I start a thread often other questions come up as a result of the discussions which are not directly related to the original topic. Should I move that question to it's own thread?

I am a old guy who is fairly new to electronics. I mostly repair tube/valve guitar amps. I have lately built a few guitar amp kits for other people.

I have started a new project to build a Fender style Deluxe Reverb using a AB763 schematic for myself.

In the process of building this amp I am trying to learn why things work the way they do and have many questions. Some of those questions are the type any beginner might ask and others are of a much more complex nature, some practical and some theoretical.

Where is the best place to post these questions? Should I state the general level of my understanding of the subject matter in the beginning of the post?

Thanks,

Billy

If its repair, then repair subforum..
New project, you know we have subforum just for projects...
If its more general new to electronics, Beginners is good place to ask...

Dont fear too much, you learn soon enough where to put things. Moderators can move threads they think are in wrong place. So just try your best and dont worry.
Electronics, Linux, Programming, Science... im interested all of it...

Thanks lapm,

One other issue I am struggling with is how to post schematics and photos that appear in the post. Photos I have taken with my iPhone seem to be to large to post as attachments.

I can place those photos on IMGUR or FLICKER but don't know how to get them to show up in the post.

Thanks,

Billy

If you're posting on a computer you connect your phone to your computer, download the image, resize it and post it.

If you're posting on your phone you might want to use Tapatalk that handles that mess for you instead of using the mobile webpage.

I can place those photos on IMGUR or FLICKER but don't know how to get them to show up in the post.

IMGUR is by far the easiest, but they just annoyingly changed their webpage layout.

Steps:
CTRL-C your image
imgur.com
CTRL-V your image and it will auto upload
Hover over the image and a menu will show up, hover over the down arrow, click "Get Share Links"
Click COPY on BBcode
CTRL-V that BBcode into your forum post

If you email the photo from your iPhone to yourself, the phone will ask you if you want to reduce the size of the picture to Large, Medium or Small before sending. Just pick one of those. I usually find Medium or Small is plenty of resolution.

Yes, the IMGUR change is more than a little annoying. Thanks for the instructions. I will give that a try. Also, I changed over to windows 10 a few months back and I am still trying to get use to where everything is.

There are several things I need to do that I just have not got to the best solution yet, here and on other sites.

Posting photos, posting schematics, dealing with PDFs, and a quick way to draw a small part of a schematic. Perhaps it is a function of my limited experience in electronics but I find it hard to understand many conversations without reference to a schematic.

The internet is a wonderful place to exchange ideas, learn new stuff, and meet new people. Perhaps it is intuitive for some who have grown up with computers. Me, I sometimes feel like this guy  |O...lol

Cheers,

Billy

Some people may not know how to do this.

That is a very good point.   I do it but I am not sure I use the most straight forward way.    This is what I do:

- USB connect iPhone to my Windows 7 system.
- Look into iPhone files system, select and copy to one of the computer directories.
- Double click in (copy) picture of interest to open Windows Photo Viewer.
- Use Mail drop down, select reasonable size and mail to myself.
- Open mail, send/receive to expedite and detach picture somewhere.   This picture is smaller and can be attached in forums.

Is there a better way using just Windows ?   No downloads or purchased software ?

Probably not, but it would be silly not to want to use any downloaded software. There are great free image tools like IrfanView.
